How to create fun fall vignettes in a farmhouse loving dining room

Spread the love

Good morning friends!  Today I’ve joined our host, Marty, from A Stroll Thru Life, for another fabulous week-long fall-inspired tour.  We actually got a couple of cooler days this week so I’m singing all the hallelujahs and I’m so ready for the changing colors and smoky smells.  How about you?  Are you ready too?  Do you need a little autumn inspo?  If so, you’ve come to the right place.  There are 25 of us but I’m the girl with the heart that screams vintage-loving-country-living forever!  I’m sharing how to create fun fall vignettes in a farmhouse-loving dining room.

If you’ve hopped over from Follow the Yellow Brick Home, howdy!  So glad you’re here.  Didn’t you love Amber’s new home?  She’s quickly making it her own and it’s gorgeous!

How to Create Fun Fall Vignettes in a Farmhouse Loving Dining Room!

If you missed this years fall living room tour, you can see that here.  I used the same soft colors to keep it cohesive.  For me, it’s still to hot to look at oranges and reds when I’m a sweat ball.  Let’s get started. The farmhouse is basically a square box and the dining room is in the middle of that box.  It’s the only room with a table to eat at and it also houses my desk so keeping it usable, clutter free and cute are what I keep in mind when decorating it.

dining room with gold leaves on chandelier and fall centerpiece of dishes

Since this room is the main thoroughfare for the entire house I don’t want it to feel crowded.  The other rooms can feel full but not the dining room and I like keeping things handy and easily accessible.

Keeping things open, clutter free and cute are important to me when I decorate the dining room so there are 2 things that I keep in mind. 1. Choose accessories that have meaning.  (Heirlooms/family treasures and mixing old with new).  That’s the cute part. 2. Decorate only the corners of the room and keep things simple.  That’s the keeping it open part.

table centerpiece of white dishes, acorn candle and wall mirror in background

This year, the centerpiece is a pot with feathery stems, the dishes we’ll use, silverware, and a fun little acorn candle with a few small pumpkins for festiveness.  Can’t get much easier than that!  The tablecloth is a throw blanket that can be thrown in the washing machine when needed.

2 vintage wood chairs, wall mirror and fall decorations

You can see there are two doors on this side of the dining room.  The one on the right leads to the Desi and Lucy twin bed bedroom and the other to the back porch/mudroom with the only full bathroom.  This house was built before plumbing and electricity so the Mister’s family added the bathroom to the back of the house years after his great grandmother lived here.

We keep the door on the left closed because even though we can, we don’t cool the mudroom.  The Mister says cooling and heating this old house is like cooling a tent so he closes the vent out there and only cools the bathroom.  Plus, the mudroom is more for storage right now and not all that cute.  Believe me, it’s on the list for a revamp soon.  Unfortunately, it’s the first and last thing you see when you leave the house and getting on my last nerve.

white dining hutch with white dishes and wheat bundle on floor

As you move around the room, the next corner is the hutch where I store a bunch of white vintage dishes.  It only got a couple of white pumpkins and a grassy bundle.  There are two matching iron thingamajigs that flank the doorway to the living room.  They each got a small wreath.  I think that’s as much as this space can handle because even though all the dishes are white, it can look overwhelming.

This corner gets the most decor because even though you see the dining table first, you see this space as you walk through to the living room and on to our bedroom.

Small white decorative cabinet with fall pumpkins, leaves, gourd and pitcher with flowers

Thankfully, the catch-all surface seems to be the dining table or the coffee cart in the kitchen so I enjoy floofing this area a little more.  It has treasures I’ve found or were given to me.  Each one has so much texture and the colors are perfect for autumn.  Even the iron pieces have little acorns on them!

Now that you’ve seen how to create fun fall vignettes in a farmhouse-loving dining room, I hope you saw something you can incorporate into your own home.  Especially if you too love keeping things simple and decorating with all things vintage, rustic and repurposed!

I love it too and thank you. The hutch used to be olive green which is obviously not my vibe. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Cheers to fall!

Love the garland you’ve woven through your dining room lights, Cindy! That little acorn candle is so cute and looks great with your vintage pieces and silverware! Your hutch is gorgeous, I love the two-tone look, it’s perfect for your farmhouse and you’ve decorated it so prettily! You made me giggle when you said it’s like heating/cooling a tent! Old homes have so much character though you can forgive them almost anything!

    • September 15, 2023 / 8:27 am

The heating and cooling a tent is true but you are right, I can forgive that but the Mister can’t. I tell him there are so many other things wrong with the house that he should pick something he has control over. But nope, he’s miserable if he’s cold. I’m never cold so it works for me! lol. Thank you Jayne for the visit and sweet compliments. I’m slowly but surely getting ready for fall.

Beautiful vignettes Cindy! Having a clutter free room really helps you appreciate the seasonal items. I also love how you wrapped the leaves around your lighting. It helps to give the room a fall glow. Great touring with you again!

I try and always put something over the table to create a cozier feeling. Could just be me but I enjoy something over my head. Feels comforting. That seems like a long explanation. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thank you Shelley.

You are the only person I pinned anything from this Fall…so soft and lovely. I love all your antique furniture and not everything white…which I’m just getting bored with. Color sings with our souls…hugs, Sandi

    • September 15, 2023 / 8:32 am

Well that makes me smile Sandi, thank you. I’m excited you saw something you liked. I still love white but the warmer tones have to be there for me to feel comfy. Happy fall!

    • September 15, 2023 / 8:37 am

The house is getting there! I just need to do the bedrooms. Thankfully it’s a small house or I’d already be worn out. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Not. I think I could decorate or move furniture every single day and be happy. Thanks bunches Wendy.

The pitcher holding the hydrangea blossom in your treasure cabinet is so beautiful! Is it an antique?

    • September 15, 2023 / 8:41 am

It is definitely old but sadly, I don’t know anything about it. It has a removable lid with a flower on top. I found it at an antique store and the cashier and I both loved it. I’ll have to do some research on it. Thanks for the visit Liz.

Cindy, I love your dining room! Of course your pie safe cupboard with ironstone and the gorgeous shelving grabbed my attention. Your wall color really is beautiful there setting off all the whites and creams!

    • September 15, 2023 / 5:01 pm

I was thinking I needed more to fill the pie safe! The hubs disagrees and says the old think could collapse. We’ll see. And I never receive compliments on the wall color so thank you! I figured I was the only one that liked it. lol.

Your farmhouse dining room looks lovely, and I love that you showed us each corner! The color palette is lovely, and I always get a kick out of reading your posts! Hugs!

    • September 15, 2023 / 5:05 pm

Well I didn’t actually show every corner. You are missing my desk. It doesn’t look bad but I didn’t decorate it for fall. It tends to look crappy by the end of the day so I don’t need more. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks Julie!

  14. September 15, 2023 / 5:42 am

I don’t remember seeing your whole farmhouse dining room before. What a charming room and you have the perfect spots for collections and vignettes! Love your display cabinet with the pretty pitcher holding hydrangeas. Thanks for the tour, loved it!

    • September 15, 2023 / 5:07 pm

I don’t usually show the entire thing because the Mister likes to drop his crap stuff in there. He’s been busy outside so I was able to spew my pumpkins all over the place first. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks Michelle, glad you liked it.

  15. September 15, 2023 / 9:51 am

Your fall home is beautiful Cindy! That hutch is fabulous!! Hugs – Tanya

Thank you Tanya. I hope to one day fill it up with vintage ironstone. ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. September 15, 2023 / 12:29 pm

I love the Fall leaves on the chandelier; adds just the right seasonal touch to the middle of the room.

    • September 15, 2023 / 5:09 pm

It made it more cozy for sure. Thanks Lora!

  17. September 15, 2023 / 12:48 pm

Oh, Cindy, your farmhouse decorated for fall is swoon-worthy. My heart did a little flip-flop when I saw it. What a lovely fall retreat for y’all.

    Niky

    • September 17, 2023 / 9:55 am

Thank you so much Niky! We actually call it the Richter Retreat because everyone that visits wants to stay longer, says it’s so peaceful and is so relaxed. Our doors are always open if you want to every come visit. ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. September 16, 2023 / 12:52 pm

Your farmhouse dining room is very calming and pretty in your neutral color scheme, Cindy. I have a tub or two of ironstone I have yet to unpack from storage since moving in 2019 and again in 2021. Thingamajig….one of my Panoply sisters has actually put that on a ticket selling an item for which she had no clue but loved it and had to have it. ๐Ÿคฃ

    • September 17, 2023 / 9:58 am

There are plenty of thingamajigs around here. Sometimes not know is the best. Especially since I love to repurpose things. Your Panoply sis sounds like we could be good friends. ๐Ÿ™‚ And girl, you need to unpack that ironstone or just send the boxes to me! Thank you Rita. Happy Sunday!

  20. September 17, 2023 / 6:18 am

    Cindy,
Your fall decor at the farmhouse is spot on. I’m with you…It really is hard to use darker orange tones when we are still in shorts and flip-flops! I reallyy like the hutch painted a darker color for the white dishes to stand out.

    • September 17, 2023 / 10:15 am

I turned the a/c waaaaay down to start my decorating and yep, I had my flip flops on! ๐Ÿ™‚ And that entire hutch used to be a light olive green. Painting it white with black inside was my first upcycle at the farmhouse. There were more pressing things I should have done first but olive just isn’t my vibe. Thank you Christy.

  21. September 22, 2023 / 11:10 am

The calming neutral and natural elements loom perfect in your home! The hutch is styled perfectly!

    Happy fall!

    • September 22, 2023 / 12:53 pm

Much appreciated Amber, thank you. Can hardly wait to get back down there to enjoy it!
