Hello my wonderful friends!  I hope you have some time to spend with me today because there’s a lot to see!  I’m joining our host, Kelly at The Tattered Pew, for the Bloggers’ Best Fall Home Tour series.  There’s 25+ tours you don’t want to miss!  I chose to share some of our almost 100-year-old farmhouse instead of our everyday home.  It’s a kick-up-your-feet and laze-around-all-day-vibe this year with simple, minimal decoration.  So, grab your coffee and let’s get started with how to achieve an easy softer look for fall at the farmhouse.

How To Achieve An Easy Softer Look For Fall At The Farmhouse

There’s just something about spending the fall days out in the country being surrounded by pastures with tall pine trees, big oaks with Spanish moss all over them and farm animals.  In my book, the animals make it worth the stroll in the deep sand.  Yep, the entire property is sand.  It can give a girl some leg muscles if it weren’t so hot.

However, if you’re like me and want to be barefoot as much as possible, the fall and winter months are the time to do that around here.  The sand gets nice and cool.  Something awesome about having sand is when there’s a lot of rain, it simply soaks down into the sand and doesn’t produce mud.  Stupendous!

The sand is great for the animals and their hooves as well.  But having wet hooves is an entirely different (and kind of yucky) post so we’ll move on.

Every year since we’ve been coming down to the farmhouse I’ve decorated with the darker tones like rust, orange, gold, green, and will occasionally throw in a dark blue for fall.  This year because the weather is still so hot, I think easing into the season would work best with my cool weather cravings.

How about your neck of the woods?  Is nature cooperating where you live?

1. Choose a subtle or muted color palette.

As we go through the photos you’ll notice these main colors – white, cream, golds, and a bit of tan with warm wood tones.  Decorating is easier once you’ve decided to stick with a theme or color palette.  And softer, more muted tones are the perfect transition to fall when it’s still so hot outside.

2. Less is more.

When I pull out the fall decor bins, I grab the colors I want to use and stack it all on the dining room table.  Seeing everything together helps tremendously.  Especially if you don’t want to purchase more decor.  Even though it’s a small house, decorating 2 houses can get expensive.

3. Spread the color around the room.

You want your eye to move around the room and stop on the fun fall colors.  I love that!  Whether it’s on pumpkins, pillows, candles, fall stems, whatever.  Keep your pieces coordinated and your space will feel soothing and look fantastic.

Why not do the same with your outdoor space?!

We really enjoy being outside in the fall so dining al-fresco a few times is on the list of must-do’s.  And when the leaves change on the trees, the surroundings are already colorful so I decided the picnic table would reflect the inside of the house with its soft soothing colors as well.

The Spanish moss used as a charger under the plates was gathered from the oak trees.  I think it’s the perfect color and adds a little extra to each place setting.  The mister hates the stuff so I use it as much as I can.  Ha!

Everything on this table is a treasure.  From the pumpkins which are one of the few crafts I made that didn’t find their way to the donation box to the deconstructed lamp shades hanging on the table bar, to the vintage candelabra, chippy board, plates, bowls and silverware.

When the meal is over, I don’t even want to clean up seeing as I enjoy it so much.  And that’s all because of the soft, neutral colors and vintage goodies I surround myself with.

Well did you see how you too can achieve an easy softer look for fall at the farmhouse or anywhere for that matter?  It’s all about those 3 tips!

Next up is Michelle at Thistle Key Lane.  Her style is very different from mine but absolutely beautiful.  You’ll enjoy seeing what she’s done with her cozy, subtle style too.  Then scroll down to begin the fabulous home tours.  There are so many gorgeous ideas!

The farmhouse looks beautifully decorated for fall. I love the use of natural elements and the textures. Love that large wheat bundle and the use of feathers in your spaces.

    • September 8, 2023 / 11:03 am

That wheat bundle has been with me for years. It goes in a special bag so it doesn’t make a huge mess. lol. But I like it too. And would you believe, this is the first year I’ve used feathers? It’s true! Guess I’ve had my head in a hole for years. I love them! Thank you Tammy.

    So cozy and beautiful!

    • September 8, 2023 / 11:04 am

      Thanks bunches Stacy. Happy Fall!

Hi Cindy, your natural mantel decor is so pretty and I LOVE that DIY leaf shade–how creative! I enjoyed touring your charming home! Blessings, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction

    • September 8, 2023 / 11:06 am

Aww, thanks so much Cecilia. I appreciate that. Especially since I feel like I’m soooooo not a crafty person. 🙂

  4. September 8, 2023 / 9:33 am

Your home is always so cozy and inviting Cindy! Your pumpkins with doilies are absolutely stunning…what an amazing DIY!!! Happy fall!

    • September 8, 2023 / 11:09 am

Wow, thank you Heidi! You’ve made my day. I have loved those pumpkins for years and they are still a favorite. Super easy to make too. I had to tell myself to stop buying doilies to make more. I’m going to look crazy soon.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! In Southern Arizona we are finishing up 100’s (I’m praying) and next week are in the low 90’s so I just can’t move into Fall yet. I love neutral colors with warm woods. Brown bottles, mossy greens, acorns and wheat stems to name a few. You have confirmed my decision to wait! Besides I just started working on a thrifted ottoman!
Love following along on your journey! Have a wonderful weekend.

    • September 8, 2023 / 11:15 am

You are so sweet Jan, thank you. I love hearing that! At our home in the Dallas area it still looks like summer but I’m excited to get back to the farmhouse. When we walk in, it will transform my heart and attitude now that it’s finished and looks like fall. All I’ll have to do are the porches. Unless it’s still too hot. I refuse to do it if I’m dripping with sweat! Best wishes on the thrifted ottoman. I’ve always wanted to try something like that.

  6. September 8, 2023 / 12:04 pm

I love your approach to fall decorating this year. On the charming farmhouse scale, I would say this is off the charts! Love your leaf pillows, your mantel, the feathers, and the branch in the vintage jug! It just all works so well together. Do you feel like the outside world melts away when you come here? I’m sure you’ll enjoy it even more when temps get back in the 80s!

    • September 8, 2023 / 3:50 pm

You hit the nail on the head Michelle – I do feel like the outside world melts away we I walk in. Well not into the mudroom but the rest of it. The mudroom is a constant work in progress. It’s used more for storage, work boots, tools and coveralls at the moment and kinda drives me bonkers. That little house just has no closets and no storage. Thank you so much for the sweet comment. I always think I’m the only one that would like this old house so you made me smile. And yes, when true fall weather comes, I’ll be on the front porch all day and love it.

Simple and easy that’s what I like. I love your ideas and how you decorate for Fall. Hopefully, it will get cooler soon and I too love to go barefoot.

    • September 8, 2023 / 3:55 pm

Barefoot is the best although we can’t do that lately. We had a bumper crop of stickers this year. Trying to irradicate them but it’s a chore. Glad you like the fall decorating ideas. Hope it gets cooler for you soon as well. It’s 108 here today. Ugh!!!

    Cindy,

I love all the beautiful fall touches you’ve added to the Farmhouse. Cozy and inviting! The Fall pillows are my favorites. 🙂

    • September 8, 2023 / 3:56 pm

Thanks Libbie. I found the pillows at Home Goods. Happy fall decorating!

I agree about keeping colors during this autumn heat on a cooler or neutral tone…orange, red, yellow, rust, etc. make a place feel hotter than needs to be…It’s almost 100° here and the a.c. is constantly going.

    • September 8, 2023 / 3:57 pm

And we certainly don’t need to feel hotter, do we! It’s currently 108 outside. Ugh, I’m so over it. Thanks for the visit and comment Elaine! Hope your weekend is wonderful.

  10. September 8, 2023 / 3:19 pm

Looks so cozy, Cindy. I especially like your leaf throw pillows. So pretty!

    • September 8, 2023 / 3:59 pm

I found the pillows at Home Goods. At first I didn’t think they’d look that good on a white couch but I ended up liking them. Thanks Kim!

  11. September 9, 2023 / 12:48 am

Your farmhouse is fall fabulous Cindy! I love your leaf pillow, mantel, and color palette. The natural elements throughout are the perfect touch. Happy Fall, my friend!

    • September 9, 2023 / 9:55 am

You are so sweet to say that Kim. I think of your sweet cottage all the time and go back and forth on whether to add more color. 🙂 I’ll add color to our everyday house. Autumn is almost here!

  12. September 9, 2023 / 7:45 am

Wonderful fall ideas! Thank you for sharing,

  13. September 9, 2023 / 8:04 am

I love the muted color palette, Cindy. It’s absolutely gorgeous. The details you added with the books and the feathers tucked in are my favorite.

Happy to be touring with you this week. Cheers to fall!

    • September 9, 2023 / 9:58 am

Thank you so much Jen. The feathers (first time using them) and the stacked books are my favorite too. Hoping fall gets here soon! Happy weekend.

  14. September 9, 2023 / 8:32 am

I loved your approach to fall decorating this year, Cindy! The softer colors make it feel so shabby chic! And that outdoor shade with the leaves is brilliant! Happy sandy fall my friend!

    • September 9, 2023 / 10:00 am

I am already looking forward to getting down there again. Hoping the weather will be cooler and I can decorate the porches and enjoy them. Scout (donkey) didn’t get enough attention last trip and she let us know it every time she saw us. 🙁 Thank you for the encouraging comment. You are the best.

  15. September 9, 2023 / 9:27 am

I love the entire vibe you pulled together here. Looks great!!

    • September 9, 2023 / 10:03 am

I was hoping it would look and feel both inviting and soothing with the soaring temps outside. Hope it works. It’s going to be 105 today. :/ Thanks Jennifer!

  16. September 9, 2023 / 11:20 am

Cindy your subtle fall decor and neutral colors are so soothing! I am loving your use of feathers too! And then the outside table? Wow just all so lovely! Happy Fall my friend!

    • September 10, 2023 / 10:13 am

I appreciate that Kelly, thank you! Soothing is what I was going for since the temps are still hovering around 105. Bleh. I’ve been told that next week get get rain and cooler temps! Might even hold my breath for this one. 🙂

  17. September 9, 2023 / 11:33 am

Even though the weather is still so hot, your home looks cool and fall-inspired! So pretty. Happy Fall.

    • September 10, 2023 / 10:15 am

Thank so much Yvonne. Slowly but surely, the old farmhouse is coming along. Happy Sunday!

  18. RACHEL HARPER
    September 9, 2023 / 2:16 pm

    Cindy,
your ideas for a softer fall decor are spot on. I love your tour.

    • September 10, 2023 / 10:18 am

Aww, thanks so much Rachel. You know I always think I’m the only one that’s gonna like it. The mister sees it as more things he has to watch out for and not get dirty. He prefers everything to be dark brown or gray so no one sees the dirt. Ugh, boys. Happy Sunday!

  19. September 10, 2023 / 12:09 pm

Cindy, those soft neutral colors make me want to curl up and relax in there! I especially love the leaf pillows and that outdoor table is gorgeous. I cannot wait for our temperatures to drop this week—it’s been such a scorcher around here, we all deserve a break, right?

    • September 11, 2023 / 8:08 pm

Yes we do! Crossing my fingers the weatherman guessed correctly this week. 😉 I’m ready to curl up at the farmhouse with a quilt and rock the day away. Thanks for the visit Kate.

  20. September 10, 2023 / 1:58 pm

I love what you did with your outside dining pendant. I think you got those leaves from HL… I picked up the same ones! Nice and full leaf picks! And I love the neutral color. I bought those exact same pheasant feather you have listed from Amazon. They’ll be in my tour this coming week! Love your farm decor this fall~ So pretty!

    • September 11, 2023 / 8:10 pm

Great minds think alike Julie! When I got those little stems I like the color too and had no idea what I was going to do with them. I added some to the chandelier in the dining room too. Makes it feel so much more cozy in there. Looking forward to seeing them in your tour.

  21. September 10, 2023 / 8:13 pm

Cindy, your farmhouse is decorated beautifully for fall! I love the soft, neutral colors you used. It looks so soothing and welcoming! Happy Fall, my friend!

    • September 11, 2023 / 8:12 pm

Thank you Lynne. Soothing and welcoming was the goal so I greatly appreciate that. Bring on the fall!

  22. September 10, 2023 / 10:01 pm

Cindy, the cottage is looking so festive. I love the soft colors you chose and I’m
drooling over the apron with the feathers. You are so creative my friend.

    • September 11, 2023 / 8:12 pm

Aww, that is so sweet Wendy, thank you. I don’t feel all that creative lately so that makes my day. Happy fall!

  23. September 11, 2023 / 4:38 pm

Here I am again looking at your glorious fall decor. I didn’t comment before but I wanted to tell you how much I ADORE the pheasant feathers and the deconstructed lamp. GENUIS!!!!

    • September 11, 2023 / 8:14 pm

You are so funny. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I know how you feel though. That extra step takes up a lot of time! You are welcome anytime to come hang with me at the farmhouse. I’ll provide the drinks!

  24. September 14, 2023 / 10:41 pm

Cindy, wow! I’m so in love with your beautiful fall home tour. The little pumpkins are just adorable and I am obsessed with your mantle decor. The colors are so warm and cozy. There are so many DIY projects that I just loved. Happy fall!

    • September 15, 2023 / 5:06 pm
