GIVING A CUBBY SHELF TWO SIMPLE LOOKS FOR FALL!

Spread the love

Hello friends!  The autumn decorating around here is slow going even though I had high hopes of flying through it since I’m home alone.  Usually when I begin decorating either the kids or the Mister have already gotten everything out of the attic for me.  Doing it by myself has turned me into a curmudgeon.  I don’t even have anyone to say – I like it or meh, that’s not cute at all.  So… That’s where you come in!  I’d like your opinion on giving a cubby shelf two simple looks for fall.  Tell me which one you think would look best.

GIVING A CUBBY SHELF TWO SIMPLE LOOKS FOR FALL!

full cubby shelf with pottery and faux plants

Here’s what the shelf looked like about 20 minutes after getting it home.  I loved it so much I started adding my handmade pottery to the shelves right away.  But it’s not quite festive enough.  I need something befitting my favorite season of the year!

If you remember, I decorated the dining room mantel last week.  Keep that in mind when you help me decide what this cubby shelf should look like during fall.  If you missed the mantel, click here for that post or if you still need the 25% off code for a Photowall print of your own!  The code is good until October 26th, 2021.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Here is the shelf with the white fall decor.  Not a whole lot of difference.  Basically, all I did was add some white pumpkins.  And a teeny bit more greenery.

baby white pumpkins in a white ironstone bowl

Have you heard the unwritten rule that if you have an empty bowl, you are supposed to add pumpkins to it?  LOL!  Just kidding.  That’s not a rule but I see it in practically every home on Pinterest.  Anyway, all I did to keep them sitting higher in the bowl was fill the bottom with inexpensive eucalyptus garland.  Works like a charm.

When I stepped back I thought the white fall decor looked a bit boring.  Then I stepped into the kitchen doorway and saw both sides of the room.  The shelf looked a little odd not having much color when the opposite side had so many golds and pumpkin colors on the mantel.

Is the added color pulling at your fall heartstrings yet?  It did mine.  As a matter of fact, I had to contain myself and only use a tiny bit of color.  I didn’t want it to be overwhelming and look like I had two focal points in the room.

I do feel you can have too much greenery in places so instead of using the same greenery pots, I substituted larger green pumpkins.  For the added color on the pumpkin above, it’s just two napkin rings that I opened up.

After placing other small bits of color around on the cubby shelf I stepped back and felt it looked more cohesive with the other side of the room but I think it still needs a little more color.  Maybe more fall accessories on the top?  Maybe fill up every shelf?  Go ahead and tell me what you think.  Really!  If I didn’t want to know or if I thought it would hurt my feelings, I wouldn’t ask.  Seriously!

What do you think about giving a cubby shelf two simple looks for fall?

Should I go back to the white shelf or keep the color flowing!  Let me know in the comment section.

Thanks for the visit today and I hope you are enjoying your week!

Fall should always have color. That is where my vote goes.

I tend to think the same thing. That’s my favorite thing about fall – the beautiful fall colors. Thank you Rebecca!

Hi Cindy! I can’t remember where I found your blog but here I am! I love that cubby shelf you have. I would love to have one. But most of all, your fall decorating is lovely! I’m an long time blogger but quite for about a year but I’ve started back and hope you’ll pop in to see me.

I like to more colorful option for sure. Maybe add a little bit of black to go more with the picture over the mantel? That would be my only suggestion.

    • August 31, 2021 / 2:05 pm

Adding black?! That’s something I hadn’t thought of before! Love your suggestion Melinda, thank you!

The one with color added looked so cute and perfect, loved it. Have fun, you did great all by yourself.

    • August 31, 2021 / 2:14 pm

You are so sweet Marlene, thank you. Things around here are still a work in progress. And by the time anyone comes home to see it, even if they don’t like it, it will be too late to do anything about it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m loving the bit of color in the second styling! You could try adding a bit more color, and then always remove it if it starts looking to be too much! Love those green pumpkins!

    • August 31, 2021 / 2:25 pm

Great advice Julie, thank you! I tend to go overboard when it comes to seasonal decorating so I’m trying to cut back but I think it needs more for sure. I’ll do what you suggested and see how it goes. Got the green pumpkins at Hobby Lobby. Love the color of them.

The little bit of color looks great….love it

    • August 31, 2021 / 2:37 pm

Thank you Katt. I think the bits of color are better too. I keep thinking – more more more! LOL. Someone hold me back!

Colorful Fall shelves are perfect! I’ve never left shelves or cubbies empty, so that is the problem for me. I think you’ve got just the right amount of color right now, so putting something in those empty spaces is difficult. I’d go very simple there! Love your green pumpkins, especially with the vine across the one! Pinned it!

    • August 31, 2021 / 2:40 pm

Thanks so much Tammy. I’m glad you brought up the empty shelves. I know less is more but in my case that’s so hard. So your advice on going very simple is just what I needed to hear. Got the green pumpkins at Hobby Lobby. Have a great week.

Both are beautiful, but I love the fall color touches! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿงก

  18. August 31, 2021 / 6:44 pm

Hey Cindy! I love both looks, but I love the color version more. Color seems to be the trend this year!

    • September 1, 2021 / 4:45 pm

Looks like I’m actually going to be trendy this year?! Nice!

    • September 1, 2021 / 4:47 pm

More is more-lol. I tend to go crazy but I’m going to add a smidgeon more. :0

  19. August 31, 2021 / 11:06 pm

So pretty Cindy. The shelf looks so balanced! I can definitely take some tips from you! ๐Ÿ™‚ And I love all the little pumpkins! So sweet. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Cindy,
I love this. Thanks so much for sharing!

    • September 1, 2021 / 4:49 pm

Thanks Rachel. It took a while but I am loving the colored version.

  21. September 1, 2021 / 4:32 pm

Love, love, love this cabinet so much, Cindy! You know I adore all those neutrals but the pops of color just make it feel like Fall! I’m definitely getting pumpkins to put in a bowl too. Yours are perfection, as always! Sending you lots of hugs and can’t wait to see what you decide, CoCo

    • September 1, 2021 / 5:19 pm

I’m tired so I’m keeping the color since it was the last thing up. LOL. If I really hated it though, I’d change it. But I don’t! So it stays! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks CoCo!

  22. September 3, 2021 / 7:31 am

In my everyday decor, I like whites and neutrals. But the holidays and seasons are where I like to add some pops of color because they all work well with the neutral whites and grays in my home. Plus it almost feels like a whole new place when different colors come out each season.

I vote for the autumn colors!

That is so true Niky. It’s like a whole new place which is something I try and do all the time. I wonder why I’ve never thought of it that way before? Maybe because I feel like I need to move furniture around? Who knows. Thank you so much for saying that. I love it!

Did I mention last week how much I liked that green pumpkin in your cubby? I canโ€™t believe I forgot to check it out when I was there. It reminds me of a watermelon. As usual, too many great things to take in all at once. Love these parties!

    • September 3, 2021 / 10:04 am

I don’t think you mentioned it but it is a pretty green. I can see why it reminds you of a watermelon. Glad you like the parties. Have a great weekend.

I have checked everywhere and canโ€™t find a faux dark green pumpkin like yours. Can you tell me where you bought it? Iโ€™m hoping you donโ€™t say that you painted it. I live in north Texas.

    • September 7, 2021 / 12:30 pm

Painting would be the last thing I do. LOL. I found them at Hobby Lobby. Hope you find them DeeDee. Thank you

Somehow I had missed this post. I LOVE your cubby shelves. Those velvety mini pumpkins are just too cute. Have a wonderful weekend. Enjoy this cooler weather too!

    • September 23, 2021 / 11:10 am

I am sooo enjoying this fantastic weather! Plus I’m having one more birthday party on Saturday. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks for the visit Laura!
