A Summer Mantel Refresh

A refreshed summer mantel with artwork and blue bottles
Spread the love

Hello my wonderful friends!  I have a quick question.  Are y’all online shoppers?  I have to be desperate to order things online.  Well except groceries, that’s no biggie.  But when it comes to choosing pillows, art work, clothes, etc., I grind my teeth and mutter under my breath.  Its just not for me.  Hello Covid-19.  One day I was bored out of my mind so today I’m sharing the results from an online shopping spree (more like a small splurge) and a Summer Mantel Refresh.

A Summer Mantel Refresh

Stone mantel with columns, art work and vintage blue bottles

I know from the first photo you’re probably thinking what was she thinking?  That white back ground on that print doesn’t work with the creamy stone color.  I see that but let me explain.  I wasn’t planning to buy anything online even on the most monotonous day.  But then I opened up my emails and saw a coupon from Kirkland’s for 25% off.

I thought to myself I could use a new print for the mantel.  Something with blues and greens would be nice. And the spring mantel with it’s brown antique wooden sign (you can see that here) had been up there since January and it was totally lacking in summer charisma.  Plus, how could a little perusing hurt?

A Lesson Learned

The next thing I knew, I had the print above in my cart and another for the mantel in the dining room.  I may also have had some canisters, a lamp, some pillows, a couple of vases and another small print in the cart as well.  What the cuss?!  I’d gone crazy.  I realized another reason I don’t like online shopping… I can’t stop clicking.

Finally, I looked at the top of the screen at the little shopping cart symbol and noticed something else.  There was a tiny number next to it.  It said 12.  Twelve?!  That can’t be right.  It was.  After tallying up my wish list and adding in the 25% off coupon, it was way way way over what I wanted to spend on a summer mantel refresh.

My thrifty self acquired an irksome conscience so I clicked remove several times and got down to this bicycle print you see above and one other that I’ll show you in another post.  I could live with that.  The prints were so stinkin’ cute and they’ll work all summer long.  Even with July 4th coming.  I can see a couple of small flags tucked in those heavenly blue bottles.  Plus, I was saving a whole 25%!

Another online shopping lesson learned

I would enjoy having had the extra goodies in my shopping cart and while I love the whimsical print, it looked quite a bit larger on my computer screen.  I should have measured.

Oh well, it looks summery and I’m to lazy to deal with sending it back.  Another reason I dislike online shopping – the returns!  At least the blue bottles and transformers were free.  I just pulled them from a shelf.  The greenery stems were free too.  I clipped them from the yard.

Do you go crazy online?  Have you purchased something that wasn’t at all what you thought it would be but made it work because you were too lazy to fool with returning it?  I’m going back to being a touchy feely girl.

Happy Summer Decorating!

I love this piece you bought! I think it looks great and your blue has are a perfect addition.

It does happen online. I do the same as you did when I open my cart and see the total. It adds up fast.

    Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you Cindy, I needed to hear that. I didn’t want it to be a piece that I looked at everyday with disappointment. Happy Weekend to you too!

I love the look, the blue bottles really make it pop.

I do love my blue bottles. I should probably get more since I had to borrow a couple from another spot. Yeah, that’s it. I need more! LOL. Thank you Cindy. I appreciate your comment.

I love the picture of the bike, very summery. Where did you get the 2 columns on each side of the fireplace? Very cute!!

Some builders were tearing down an old farmhouse in a giant pasture about 15 years ago. I bounced my car through the pasture and asked if I could have them. The guy said sure and loaded 6 of them in the car. It was fabulous. I love them! Thank you Mona.

Love the picture, I’m looking forward to seeing your other purchase.

Thank you Susan. I love that one too. Coming soon! 😉

Yeah, it might have been better with some cream in the painting but it looks fine. I am so sick of matchy matchy neutrals, white, cream, wood, beige. Snore. One scrolls through homes and sees the same thing over and over and over. You went out on a limb a bit and it works. I buy so much online for my tablescaping hobby. And yes, sometimes I end up with the wrong color for something. It’s always an adventure!

    • June 6, 2020 / 3:55 pm

Ugh. When you get the wrong color, do you send it back? I think that’s such a pain. I have a plate addiction so a tablescape hobby sounds super fun! Thanks Beth.

As I was looking I honestly didn’t think I’d put that much in my cart! Seriously crazy. Thanks Marlene.

The picture is beautiful! It makes me think of Paris, so it’s my favorite thing you’ve ever bought, lol. I don’t love to shop, so when I’m forced to, I do it online. I have brands that I can count on, so it usually turns out fine. When you get tired of that picture, I want it. 😁 💙 😁

    • June 6, 2020 / 4:01 pm

😂 You’re funny Gayle but if ever I give it away, it’s yours. 😉. Glad you like it!

I don’t like to shop much (love to look though!) & I’m trying to downsize, I really enjoy looking online. I put stuff in the cart & then shock myself when I look at the total! But I never plan to buy it all in the first place. I save for later or remove until I get to what I actually need right now. Yesterday & today I shopped Zulilly & Tractor Supply looking for a birthday gift. I knew what I wanted as soon as I saw it so I called the store to schedule a pickup. I actually had it in my REAL cart when I saw it in a different color that will be (even more) PERFECT for my sweet SIL.

When things show up on my “feed” I remember to order for gifts or when I’m ready to work on the next space.

    • June 6, 2020 / 8:37 pm

That sounds like the way to do it Jeannie! I found some super cute garden decor in Tractor Supply. Usually I leave that store up to the Mister but will be going with him more often now. 😂. Thanks for the visit!

I had to laugh when you said “cart.” I have some friends who woud literally fill a cart at TJMaxx with clothes they wanted to try on, then not buy a thing! I have only ordered a few things online. Recently got a bed set (quilt, sheets, shams and bedskirt) on Kohl’s that I am happy with. I like how the blue/gray of your print tones nicely with your pillows. And it is summery! I am not an earth tone person but would definitely use pops of color to jazz them up.

    • June 7, 2020 / 12:04 am

I’ve seen and known those cart fillers. I couldn’t do that because I’d feel terrible for the people having to hang it all back up! When I was in high school I had a retail clothing job and I always disliked dealing with the mound of clothes left behind. Most of which were in the floor of the dressing rooms. 🙄 Thanks Kathy!

The bicycle print is wonderful! Very summery. And just the right color and size. Can’t wait to see the other one.

Thanks so much Jane! I really appreciate that. ❤️

The print is super lovely. I think the white background works out better than a cream one because this way it pops on your wall 😉

    • June 8, 2020 / 8:13 pm

Thanks Marie. I think so now. Although I think it makes the stone look even more yellow, it makes the white sofa coordinate better. 😁

I have to delete all of those enticing emails STAT. I also have to watch my thrift store spending, but now I’m sorry I walked away from 6 blue and purple vintage telephone glass parts. Seeing your cute mantel setup makes me extra sorry.

This is a pretty summer mantel, and I’m looking forward to the other picture buy 🙂

    Take care

    • June 12, 2020 / 12:28 pm

Nothing haunts us like the vintage we didn’t buy, right?! LOL! And I totally agree about the emails. I have one right now from Bath and Body Works looming over me. “Select 3-wick candles are 50% off” – Ayi yi yi! Thanks for stopping by Rachelle. Hope you have a great weekend!

  14. June 18, 2020 / 1:02 pm

This is such a gorgeous mantel, Cindy! I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve done the same thing and then realized I didn’t need half the stuff in my cart. It’s so easy to click and dream 🙂 Everything you’ve shared for summer has been fantastic! Love your style lady. Pinned! Hugs, CoCo

    • June 18, 2020 / 4:14 pm

Thank you CoCo. I hope to get back into the stores and stop the online thing. I don’t like it. And after living with that mantel for a week, I’ve already gone down to half the bottles. LOL!

  15. June 25, 2020 / 3:19 pm

I think it is a wonderful pop of summer! Especially pairing it with the bottles and the vines that sort of climb up into the painting. Nicely done!

    • June 25, 2020 / 8:01 pm

Thank you Eileen. I will be switching some of the stems to flags in a day or so. Glad you could visit. Happy Summer!
