Customizing a Store Bought Garland

Spread the love

Hello my Homies!  If you are hopping over from Follow the Yellow Brick Home, welcome!  Today is Pinterest Challenge Day!  That’s the day several creative blogger friends join together to show how one inspiration photo can have so many looks and be made into whatever style works for us.  We do this so you can do it too!  I’m customizing a store bought garland to coordinate with my Valentine’s Day dining room mantel.

Pinterst Challenge graphic in gray and pink

The style in our city home is a crazy mix of things.  A bit modern farmhouse, a little vintage, some quirkiness, a drop of traditional with repurposed goodies thrown in there too.  Not many people would claim those together so I suppose it’s called Cindy Style?  Not sure.  The Mister doesn’t vote.  He says all of his taste is in his mouth and lives by the motto – happy wife, happy life.  You won’t hear me argue with that.  πŸ˜‰

white valentine garland by Refresh Living

Our inspiration photo today comes from Jenny at Refresh Living.  She’s a repurposer too so you know she’s tops on my list.  Take a look at her farmhouse inspired Valentine’s decor.  I like that it looks easy to make, it’s white, has twine and it has pom pom balls.  I love me some pom pom balls.

Customizing a Store Bought Garland

gracy checked valentine garland

I was going to make the hearts with yarn but when I was at Hobby Lobby, I found a Valentine garland I liked a little more.  The gray check was calling my name.  As cute as it is, I thought it slightly plain for Cindy Style so customizing it with pink was the plan.

valentine craft supplies

I read on the package the garland was 72″ long but with only 4 hearts that seemed short so I bought two.  And the heart stickers were already layered (love layers too) so it was a no-brainer.  I could have made the pom poms but remembered that Hobby Lobby sells trim in the fabric section.  Another no-brainer.

All I needed to do to make this one large garland was remove the last set of pink and white beads and tie together the twine from each garland.  Easy peasy.  Before I tied the two ends together I did push everything out a little and added the galvanized Valentine word I found at the Target Dollar Spot.  It actually had 3 words in one package for a dollar!

“Valentine, XOXO and Love”

You can tell the mantel in the dining room is large and in charge so getting two garlands was perfect.  Add the stickers and boom, I have my own customized Valentine garland!   The string of pom poms adds the perfect amount of filler above it too.  I love how it turned out!

What else can you do to dress up an everyday lamb print for a Valentine mantel?  Check out the little pink ribbon neck tie on that little cutie!  LOL.  I’m going to see how long it takes the Mister (or anyone else) to notice it.  It’s been over a week now and not a word. πŸ˜‰

Customizing a store bought garland is so easy and worth it if you are pressed for time.  This one came together in about 10 minutes and cost less than $15 but that’s because I purchased 2 of the checked garlands at 40% off.  The pom pom strand is not quite 2 yards long but was a total of $2.60.  Worth every penny.  If you want to see last years Valentine Pinterest Challenge, click here.  Tons of great ideas there too.

But before you do, you’ll want to see this years Pinterest Challenge ideas and what my friends have done to make the inspiration photo work in their homes.  First up is Katie at Let’s Add Sprinkles.  Her’s looks fantastic!

Your garland looks fabulous against your black mantel. Jazzing up a store-bought garland to make it your own is a great idea. Adding the pom-pom trim over the garland is a super nice added touch. This is such a fun challenge and I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone made this month.

Cindy, I love buying something that is almost perfect and embellishing it to make it perfectly yours. I use the pom~pom trim all the time. Love the galvanized Valentine sign. Target may be on my to~do list today. Let us know if anyone notices the pink bow on the lamb!! Thanks for hosting PC again. Always a fun project.

My pleasure Carol. Hobby Lobby carries a the larger ball trim around Christmas and that’s what I use for my tree. Looks like big snowballs. Glad you like the garland. Have a great week!

Thank you Yvonne. I don’t feel creative when it comes to crafting but I seem to find an easier (lazier) way of doing it. LOL.

The garland is absolutely adorable, and now one of a kind! Pinned.

That’s sweet of you to say Pamela. Thank you for the visit and the Pin! πŸ˜‰

    Cindy,

Very cute and super easy is my way. The plaid is you completely and added cute touches.

Amazing how a week has gone by and no one noticed the ribbon.

Thank you Cindy. I was thinking the same thing. I know if the Mister would have seen it he’d ask how I put it on there. He’s always commenting on the way I do things. Usually because it’s not the way he’d do it. πŸ˜‰

What a sweet mantel! Your garlands are perfect. That sheep art is gorgeous!

    • January 28, 2020 / 9:23 am

I love that sheep print. I remember it being really inexpensive but I can’t remember where I got it. I must be getting old. Boo. Thank you Christy. Hope you have a great week!

Cindy your Valentine mantel is so pretty. I love your garland. The gray buffalo check works perfect in you space and the punch of red and pink brings it alive. Love it!

Thanks for hosting this challenge. Always is fun working with you.

    • January 28, 2020 / 9:26 am

Thank you Terrie. My favorite color is pink so I’m all for adding the punch of color when it’s pink. Red… not so much. Still trying to get over that red and gold Old World/Tuscan phase from years ago I guess. :0

  9. January 28, 2020 / 9:37 am

Thanks for hosting, Cindy. I love the gray and white buffalo check. Adorable. I love how you customized it. Your mantel is gorgeous.

    • January 28, 2020 / 9:41 am

Thank you Katie. I do love decorating the mantel even though the size becomes a challenge sometimes. Hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s celebration with your Valentine.

This is truly happy hearts!!! I adore the Valentine edition of Where’s Waldo err What’s up with lambie. LOL

    • January 28, 2020 / 9:45 am

You crack me up Laura, thank you. The Mister still hasn’t noticed. I’ll know today if he actually reads the blog because he won’t be able to stop himself from saying anything about the ribbon on said lambie. I’m thinking I should do stuff like that all the time to keep him on his toes.

  11. January 28, 2020 / 10:47 am

Adorable, Cindy!!! (Yes you are!) I like that you found these garlands on sale then adapted them to fit your style. Turned out great and I did notice the pretty pink bow on your little lamb. πŸ˜‰ Mr. 407 will notice when he spends some time just looking in there… Thank you for hosting the Pinterest Challenge, as always! This one is definitely a favorite. <3

    Hearty hugs,
    Barb πŸ™‚

    • January 28, 2020 / 11:23 am

You say the Mister will notice but he’s even sat at the table and eaten in there and still didn’t notice! LOL! If you were to ask, he’d say he’s observant. πŸ˜‰ Glad you liked the garland Barbara, thank you.

  12. January 28, 2020 / 11:10 am

You and I were both on the gray and white check train, Cindy! Great idea to just add to and tweak the store-bought. Love the addition of the white ball fringe-easy and cute! Thanks for picking out a great picture for us!

    • January 28, 2020 / 11:26 am

My pleasure Lora. It’s always hard to choose when Pinterest is full of great ideas. As for us being on the gray and white check train, you should have known if anyone would think alike, it would be the besties! πŸ˜‰ Hope you have a marvelous Valentine’s Day.

Thank you Laura. The tulips are fake fake fake but I love them. Not just for the color but because they look real to me. Glad you love the garland too. Makes my day hearing that!

  14. January 28, 2020 / 1:25 pm

So many things to love about your customized garland! I love that you added the pom-poms as a separate garland… so smart and looks perfect. And only doing the pink on every other heart was perfect, as well! Thanks for hosting us, friend! Hugs and pinned!

    • January 28, 2020 / 1:29 pm

Thanks bunches Julie – I’ll take looking “smart”! I didn’t want to cover up all the wonderful gray check. πŸ˜‰ And I love hosting y’all – it’s a great bunch of ladies. Thanks for the pin too.

Love your heart garland and pom pom one too, that baby sheep with it’s little bow is so cute!

    • January 28, 2020 / 3:08 pm

Thanks Marlene. The little lamb appreciates the new bauble but when/if the Mister ever notices, he’ll probably sing – Dude looks like a lady! LOL. Not kidding.

    This is so cute Cindy!

Thanks so much for sharing, friend!

  17. January 28, 2020 / 10:34 pm

Cindy, you are always so entertaining! I’m cracking up thinking about that little sweet bow going unnoticed by your hubby. Your upgraded store-bought garland is perfect, and I think MANY people will find your tips so useful (like me). The mantel looks so pretty! I’ve never thought to use that little pom-pom trim as a garland, but I sure will in the future! (I’ve been dreaming of making some pillows with it, too.)

Thanks for hosting a great hop, as always!

    • January 28, 2020 / 10:48 pm

Ooh that trim would like super cute as a pillow. Feel free to make me one. I can send you my address! πŸ˜‰ I found larger ball trim around Christmas time and used it around my tree. Talk about cheap and easy! Glad you found some inspiration. Thanks Crissy!

  18. January 28, 2020 / 11:01 pm

Cute, cute, cute!!! I love “Cindy style!”
The garland looks great on your mantel (I love that piece!) and the pom-pom trim looks great as a garland in and of itself. Great idea!

Thank you so much for hosting and inspiring!

    • January 28, 2020 / 11:08 pm

Thanks so much Amber. That’s high praises coming from you! The mantel has been a lot of fun decorating. I was thinking that Pom Pom garland just might hang around even after Valentine’s Day is gone.πŸ˜ƒ

    Hey Girl!
I am feeling the love and joy in the this darling post! How clever of you to customize store-bought garland, you know I am just going to have to give this a whirl.
Love the little sheep painting over your fireplace as much as I love the garland!
    Happy Weekend,
    Jemma

    • January 31, 2020 / 12:05 pm

Thanks Jemma! Obviously you aren’t lazy or try to cut corners like I do in the craft department. You should try it but warning, cutting corners is addicting! LOL. Enjoy your Valentines day with those grandbabies!

Your Valentines decor is simply De-Lovely! πŸ˜‰ I hope that makes you laugh. I like it all, but that pink necktie is definitely my fave! πŸ’•

    • January 31, 2020 / 3:55 pm

It did make me laugh. I was actually telling the Bailey’s last weekend about how we laughed during the funeral part in that movie. Awkwaaaard. LOL!
