How We Do Fall In The Old Peaceful Farmhouse

Spread the love

Howdy friends!  I have another tour for you today.  I’m joining our host, Kelly at The Tattered Pew and gobs of other friends for a peek at how others live for autumn!  It’s almost like driving around neighborhoods at night hoping someone left their lights on and the blinds open so we can see inside without them knowing.  But this time you’re invited!  I’m starting with how we do fall in the old peaceful farmhouse.

How We Do Fall In The Old Peaceful Farmhouse

several home tour photos

If you’ve hopped over from My Thrift Store Addiction, thank you!  I’m excited to show you around a bit.  If you’ve not been here before, let me share how we’ve come to enjoy part-time country living.

southern trees with spanish moss at the farmhouse in Navasota TX. By countyroad407.comOur driveway

The story goes that when my husband’s great grandmother got married this house was her wedding present.  That was almost 100 years ago.  It’s gone through a few changes over the decades.  Like adding an indoor bathroom off the back porch, central heat/air and a little insulation in the tiny attic but none in the walls or under the house that I know of.  In the winter the mister freezes and says it’s like heating a tent around here.  I say boo hoo and put on a sweater and more socks because to me, it feels fantastic compared to the hot steamy summers.

The house is about 3-1/2 hours from home so we get down here once or twice a month on the weekends.  Autumn is my favorite time to be here.  If you connect to the wi-fi you see it’s called the Richter Retreat because it’s a totally different vibe and lifestyle than our busy lives at home in the Dallas area.  Yes, there are a ton of working projects, maintenance, cleaning and repairs to do so because of that, I try and keep our environment here more restful.

fall mantel with sofa and fall pillowsMantel was added a couple of years ago.

To me, restful means being surrounded by things you love along with a soft neutral color palette.  Although, during fall and Christmas I enjoy adding small amounts of color.  I usually find an inspiration pillow or painting or something and start there.  This year it was the pumpkin pillow in the middle of the sofa.

gourds, white candle and books on mantel

Most of the time when we’re here, I only change out half of the mantel.  There’s really no storage in this house.  Only two of the three bedrooms have a teeny tiny closet so storing seasonal decor is difficult.  If you looked under the beds, you’d see that’s where I store the bins with seasonal decor.

vintage pitcher with coffee filter flowers and a white candlestick

This season I switched out the hydrangeas in the vintage pitcher with coffee filter flowers.  I haven’t had a chance to do a tutorial on them but hoping to make time soon.  Y’all, they are so cute and one of those things that can get squished over and over in a fall bin and still look good later.  And the color is perfect for autumn.

teal and orange vintage painting with yellow stems and teal pumpkin

On the table behind the sofa sits this vignette.  The colors in the teal green pillow coordinate perfectly with the vintage painting found at an antique store for half price.  Obviously, it was meant to be, right?  That’s what I tell myself when things are super easy and are found without a lot of driving around, work or frustration. ๐Ÿ˜‰

living room with fall decor and mantelRight side of living room

I realized when we got home and started looking at the photos that I forgot to put the curtains back up on the windows.  Being out in the country, with no one to see us, we don’t care about closing blinds so it went unnoticed.  The mister helped with the slipcovers (hence the wrinkles, LOL!) and it was my job to iron the curtains.  I wasn’t feeling it and put them in a bag to bring home for pressing at the cleaners.

sunflowers, wheat and orange pumpkin on table

Speaking of things working out so well, this other painting below was at the same antique store and also half off. Just something else perfectly fall and festive.

vintage candle with vintage painting

By the way, does anyone know what this white metal piece is I hung on the wall?  I thought it would make a fun candle holder but I doubt it was meant for that.  I was going to use it as a soap holder next to the sink but not sure I want to deal with any rust etc.  But just imagine it hanging there with a giant block of soap!  So cute!

white chair with teal pillow, window and pumpkinsLeft side of living room

For a small amount of perspective, the door on the left is to our bedroom.  I’ll have to share that soon but I forgot to bring down the fall-colored sheets.  But oh my, it has another half price teal and gold vintage painting above the bed!  See… Meant to be. ๐Ÿ˜‰

white pumpkins with dark green leafy stems in white jar

Really, how we do fall in the old peaceful farmhouse is how everything is around here.  I wish you could come sit with me and chat.  Sometimes you hear a cow telling her baby to stop running like a fool.  Other times you can hear the horse galloping from as fast as he can just for the fun of it.  And sometimes, you can hear the donkey screaming at us to give her attention.  I think I love that the most.  Next on today’s tours is Michelle at Thistle Key Lane.  She has a totally different style than I do but wow, it too is so peaceful.

Cindy, I just love everything about your home!! I love the photo of the old dirt road and your use of pumpkins and gourds in decorating your home. Everything is pulled together so perfectly. I certainly see why you love it!!
    Thanks for sharing.

We don’t have ponds to look at like you do but one of my favorite spots is the driveway with all of the trees and moss hanging down. The firepit sits right next to it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you so much for brightening my day with your sweet comment. It means a lot!

I smiled when you said you hope to see inside houses at night when they have the lights on. Our last home of 17 years was waterfront in south Florida and my fav thing at Christmas was boating through the canals looking at decorations. People on the water never close their curtains. Love the tour, the history and the donkey. Great finds for falls on art and that pillow is everything.

    • September 29, 2022 / 9:45 am

LOL, glad to see someone else is trying to peer into windows! People around here keep them closed even during the day (not us). It’s very disappointing. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thank you Pamela!

I’d love hearing a horse running for no reason as long as it didn’t hit the house.

Love the paintings and coffee filter flowers

    • September 29, 2022 / 9:47 am

Thank you Cindy. When Sherlock (the horse) runs from one end of the pasture and back, I usually think he’s running from a giant fly but you never know with him. He’s something else.

I love your old farmhouse, it is a great place for peaceful living. I could sit on that porch and listen to those animals for hours. Have a blessed weekend.

    • September 29, 2022 / 9:48 am

Aww, we could sit together Marlene because I love doing that too – for hours! Great way to do nothing. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. September 29, 2022 / 10:31 am

My goodness, Cindy!! You have been so blessed to inherit that old farmhouse!!! Your photos are gorgeous. I LOVE all those vintage paintings and artwork….they are stunning. Happy fall!

    • September 29, 2022 / 6:29 pm

Blessed is right. Hoping our kids will keep it going once we’re gone! So far, I think maybe 1 out of the 3 might. :/ Fingers crossed. Thanks so much Rachel.

Hi Cindy, I absolutely love your charming mantel and welcoming front porch all decked out for fall! The first pumpkin with the lace (doily?) trim is too cute–pinned! It’s a joy to hop with you again. Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction

    • September 29, 2022 / 6:31 pm

Yep, that is a doily. I made a few like that. There’s a DIY for it on the blog if you need it. Would definitely work with all of your charming fall pieces. Enjoyed hopping with you as well. Thank you. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. September 29, 2022 / 11:17 am

Your home is so beautiful. Love the photo of the dirt road. It reminds me of my childhood. I love your use of pumpkins and gourds in your decorations, so pretty.

    • September 29, 2022 / 6:32 pm

Thank you Tammy. The road is our driveway and it’s probably my favorite spot in the whole yard. Have a great weekend.

  9. September 29, 2022 / 12:55 pm

cindy your home looks beautiful for fall! I could hang out on your front porch all day! I adore your farmhouse – you must love it! Thanks for sharing your tour today. Happy Fall!

    • September 29, 2022 / 6:33 pm

Most of the time I do love it but there are days I’d rather not find another repair or needed project. Guess it keeps us on our toes. Thank you Stacy and join me anytime on the porch! Bring me a plant that I won’t kill though please. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. September 29, 2022 / 1:09 pm

If I close my eyes I can imagine I can hear those country sounds. So peaceful. By the way I love the windows without curtains, and not having anything to block the view or light. You have certainly created a little piece of heaven here, and I wouldn’t want to change a thing. Love your fall touches and I spotted the gourds on the mantel. ๐Ÿ˜Š Lovely tour my friend!

    • September 29, 2022 / 6:35 pm

I thought of you when I got those gourds! Was wishing I could find teeny ones. Now I’ll have to live without the curtains for a while and see what I like better. Thank you Michelle and come visit sometime!

  11. September 29, 2022 / 3:10 pm

What fun history your home has! It sure is pretty and ready for fall! I especially love that thrift store artwork you found! Happy fall!

    • September 29, 2022 / 6:37 pm

Me too. I need to go back and see if there are any I could use for winter! Thanks so much Kim!

  12. September 29, 2022 / 3:19 pm

Girl, I think you need to do a blog friends retreat at the Richter Retreat… only in the winter tho! It was so fun to read the background of how you acquired this home and property! It is idyllic and I’m feeling all the simple fall vibes! And YES to a tutorial for those coffee filter flowers!!! I’ve been wanting to do those for ages! Thanks for letting us into your home away from home, I loved it!

    • September 29, 2022 / 6:40 pm

Aww, thanks so much Cindy. I have talked about a blogger friend retreat but y’all would think it more like camping – not glamping! LOL. We’ll see. One of these days we’re going to move the house and build another. Then I could definitely host a retreat! Big hugs

  13. September 29, 2022 / 6:59 pm

Hi Cindy! I loved your tour and it felt like we were chatting the whole time! You have done a great job finding that peaceful fall element in the farmhouse. I love your porch and I love your cozy family room too! And now I want to try the coffee filter flowers! Love! Thanks for joining me this week:)

    • September 29, 2022 / 9:46 pm

It was my pleasure and thank you so much for your sweet comment. I never know if people get me or my humor. It’s good to know you do. Happy Fall!

  14. September 30, 2022 / 12:11 pm

What a beautifully idyllic place to be; I love the country! Loved your tour and saw that you brought your Wabash screen cover to the farm; it’s perfect there! You’re all decorated, now you can just relax and enjoy it!

    • September 30, 2022 / 4:10 pm

I can’t believe you remembered that sign even though I know you have one too! I still have lots to do around there but it’s fun and relaxing at the same time. Except the “pre-cleaning” stuff. Thanks and hope you are enjoying your fall?!

  15. September 30, 2022 / 12:19 pm

Your house is beautiful, I love your porch! Such welcoming and cozy fall items that are so well decorated throughout your house. So much fun touring, thanks for sharing your fun finds!

    • September 30, 2022 / 4:10 pm

Thanks so much Anne. It makes my day hearing that. Happy Fall!

  16. September 30, 2022 / 12:45 pm

Love the history of your home Cindy, so special!!! I love your coffee filter flowers and definitely think you should write a tutorial on how to make them!!! Happy fall!

    • September 30, 2022 / 4:13 pm

Thank you Heidi. It is a pretty special place when you think about everyone who lived here. The mister’s great-grandma, grandma and mom! Have to say though, it’s waaaay cuter now that we are here. LOL! Boy did they love the dark overstuffed recliners! Think burgundy, forest green and navy plaid X 4! And all in that same tiny room! Ayi yi yi.

  17. October 1, 2022 / 12:50 pm

I love your farmhouse and your authentic farmhouse style, Cindy, Hands down, authentic is best. It’s why I don’t even try to pretend my style is farmhouse.

    • October 1, 2022 / 2:37 pm

LOL, I get it Rita. I tried that in our Dallas home and it never felt right so out with the farmhouse and in with the eclectic stuff I like. Not sure it has a title or set style. Always a work in progress. I love a challenge so decorating the old farmhouse is fun for me. Thank you so much! Hope you have a great weekend.

  18. October 1, 2022 / 2:31 pm

I LOVE your candle holder, Cindy…and yes, that would be a great soap dish, but I’m with you about the rust… it would just irritate me to death. The garland you have hanging on the fireplace, what that something that we can find and purchase? Always love touring with you, my friend. Love your farmhouse all decorated for fall!

    • October 2, 2022 / 3:54 pm

Yay Julie, you get me! Thank you. I have no clue about the garland on the mantel. I’ve had it for years (maybe 10) and got it in Canton, TX at a giant flea market. So sorry. Hope you have a marvelous week my friend.

  19. October 1, 2022 / 5:50 pm

What a peaceful country getaway and so cozy for fall, Cindy! I could hang out on that porch for hours. The coffee filter flowers and the berry garland are the perfect fall touch on the mantel. Happy Fall!

    • October 2, 2022 / 3:56 pm

Thank you Kate. I am about to spend the entire month sitting on my butt wasting the day away. LOL! Not kidding. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. October 1, 2022 / 9:57 pm

Your fall home is so gorgeous, Cindy. I love it all but my favorite is your porch. SO stunning! What I wouldn’t give to come and visit you for a cup of coffee just to sit there and enjoy the views. Happy to be touring with you this week. Pinned!

    • October 2, 2022 / 3:57 pm

Aww, thank you Jen. I wish you could come visit for a while. We’d have a blast!

  21. October 2, 2022 / 4:28 am

Cindy, it’s the most charming home! I love, love the coffee filter flowers…I will be keeping an eye out for that DIY! Happy Fall

    • October 2, 2022 / 3:57 pm

Thank you Jennifer. I’ll try and fit in that DIY soon.

  22. October 2, 2022 / 6:31 pm

Your porch is pretty in any season Cindy but looks extra cozy now that it’s fall. I love the coffee filter flowers. What a great idea. How amazing that you’ve had so much family history in this home. Love your style, my friend.

    • October 3, 2022 / 2:17 pm

There are some great stories that go along with this house. Maybe one day I’ll share some of them. Thanks so much for your sweet comment Kim. Made my Monday!

  23. October 2, 2022 / 8:33 pm

Cindy, I loved learning about the history of your family home. What a charming place for your family to enjoy! I love all of the fall touches you added. I can’t wait to learn how to make your your coffee filter flowers. They’re perfect for fall! It is wonderful to be touring with you. Happy Fall, my friend!

    • October 3, 2022 / 2:20 pm

Thank you Lynne. It’s weird but even though the Mister and I have been together since the early 80’s and I visited the farmhouse many times before marriage, I still don’t think of it as ours. Maybe because so much of his family is poured into this place? Anyway, I do love it. Enjoyed touring with you as well. Hope you have a great week.

  24. October 2, 2022 / 9:17 pm

Everything is so pretty! I love that pumpkin in the first picture!! It’s so pretty!! I love your driveway too, It’s like a movie set!

    • October 3, 2022 / 2:22 pm

Aww, thank you Kristin. It takes comments like yours to make me appreciate it a little more. I get down there and it’s hot, humid, dusty and there’s so much work to be done that I get a little salty about it. :0 Thanks for reminding me it’s beautiful.

  25. October 3, 2022 / 5:58 am

Such a peaceful and relaxing way to celebrate Fall, Cindy! I love all the rustic touches you’ve added throughout and how you make things feel festive and cozy all at the same time. It’s really beautiful! I have always wanted to have big cornstalks like you have on your front porch. They are just stunning! Sending you tons of hugs, CoCo

    • October 3, 2022 / 2:24 pm

Can you not get cornstalks in Florida? You should totally get some if you can. They really make a ginormous difference with the cozy feels. I just read somewhere that you can order them online from Home Depot! I had no idea and am totally doing that next year. I spent way to much gas trying to find some this year and last! You always make me smile with your comments CoCo. Thanks so much.

  26. October 4, 2022 / 6:47 pm
