How I Decorate with Baskets and Crates

Crate on table with dishes and silverware
Spread the love

Hey there!  It’s time again for the Lifestyle of Love hop!  A theme is chosen and several of my blogging friends and I show you how we use that theme in our lives.  Did you see the last one about using books in our decor?  If not, click here.   If you’ve hopped over from Create and Ponder, thank you so much!  I’m excited you’re here.  Let’s get started.  Here’s how I decorate with baskets and crates in my home.

How I Decorate With Baskets and Crates

A Lifestyle of Love Blog Hop

I have been called overly practical.  Was it a compliment?  I don’t think so.  Did it hurt my feelings?  Not really.  Did I start second guessing my decorating style?  Yes.  Did I change the way I do things?  Nope.  Why would I place pretty things around to take up space and not try and use them in some way?  That’s just not me.

Snack corner with jars, chalkboard and baskets

Baskets with linen liners make great containers!

I like things organized and easily accessible.  This is the snack corner that sits between the refrigerator and the breakfast table.  It’s been a coffee station and a hot cocoa bar at Christmas and where we usually put the soda’s and plastic cups when we have a little get together.  This summer it’s a snack station since there’s not much getting together these days.

Baskets with linens and white dishes

When I need a serving platter, I walk over and pluck one out.  If I need a table cloth or napkins, I grab those too.  It’s so much easier seeing everything right there in neat little rows.  No more getting on my hands and knees trying to dig in the back of a cabinet to find what I need.

Vintage crates keep things easily accessible!

Crate on table with dishes and silverware

I found this vintage crate at the Round Top Antique Fair a few years ago.  Speaking of easily accessible… Keeping everyday plates, flatware and napkins out is nice too.  Since we use them everyday they don’t have a chance to get dusty!  Winner winner, chicken dinner!

Vintage crates showcase two treasures at once!

Vintage crate with silver platters

If you have a large, or somewhat large, collection but not a lot of space, keeping the treasures in a vintage crate is a great way to show them off instead.  Plus if you like to use the silver platters as chargers like I do, it’s easier to find what you want when they are stacked like this.  It’s a twofer really!

Vintage is beautiful!

Okay, maybe it is a little bit like me to have pretty things sitting around that are of no practical use.  The crate with the hydrangeas is just for pretties.  And because I like to spend my days decorating and moving things around from room to room, having pretties is a must.

One more cute basket idea!

shower curtain tie back with basket and hydrangea

Last year I freshened up our guest bathroom in the ORC using only $100.00 for the entire project.  To help the shower door look a bit better, I made a shower curtain to hang over the shower door then used a small hanging basket as a tie back.  It’s fun changing out the hydrangea with different seasons.  πŸ™‚

It’s time to check out how my friends use crates and baskets in their homes.  Next up is Amber with Follow the Yellow Brick Home.  You will love her treasures!

Happy Decorating Friends!

You have such a knack for making things that are practical look so pretty, Cindy! We don’t have a lot of space in this island cottage so your ideas are always helpful. I love your summer snack station idea too. It’s so cute. I should have put one of those up instead of a cookie jar because my Corona Curves are getting fierce πŸ™‚ Thanks so much for putting this blog together. It’s always fun to see what you guys are up to! Big hugs, CoCo

Corona Curves – LOL! I was thinking yesterday the snack station should be jars of asparagus, beets and peas. Then I’d never touch it! Thanks for the visit CoCo, you always make me smile.

As a fellow lover of vintage, I say, “Give me all of the baskets and crates!”. You shared so many good ideas! After seeing the round silver platters that you use as chargers displayed in a crate, I’m wanting to both collect round silver platters and also use a crate to display a collection. Thank you for putting this series together! I am looking forward to seeing all of the ideas shared.

Well it’s cool to hear you found something different and want to do the same! I started grabbing them when I was making the silver platter wreath. Those are the left overs so chargers seemed to fit. So glad you liked it. Thanks Paula!

That little basket as a tie back for the shower curtain is a brilliant idea! Love the idea of switching out what’s in it seasonally too:) These hops are so wonderful for great repurposing and vintage ideas! Pinned. Thanks!

Beautiful ideas and great vintage finds! I love the crate with silver platters and the little shower door basket.

The hydrangeas in the wooden crate in the bedroom is gorgeous and would like to see more of that room if you have a post on it. Love the sweet wallpaper!

Thanks for organizing this fun hop!

Thank you Amber. That little room with the upside down wall paper has been posted before. I’ll have to look it up and add it in there. I should have done that but never think of those things like you do! Have you ever thought about being a mentor – my Mentor?! πŸ™‚

Hi Cindy, I’m so envious of your practicality gene. I’m loving that wonderful crate you have with dinner plates and silverware. It’s such a great idea to keep things handy. My fave is that teeny basket on your shower curtain, what a pretty touch. Thanks again for putting this gathering together!

Thank you Debra. I never really thought my practicality would come in handy. Seems to come across as cheap most days. LOL! That little shower basket has had fresh greenery and an ornament at Christmas, and fall leaves and a pine cone during fall. It’s fun coming up with new ideas for it.

Love your ideas and storage containers, i think it looks neater all in a container and out in the open, some of our things bring color to a room, like linens and plates.

    • July 11, 2020 / 4:38 pm

I think so too Marlene. I love looking over and seeing the basket of vintage linens. Probably my favorite decor item. Even more than a centerpiece of fresh flowers. :0 Say whaaat?! Okay, maybe that’s just crazy talk. Have a wonderful day!

I too like to see everything because out of sight is definitely out of mind! Love all the ideas! Thank you for hosting.

You are so right Laura! I’ve opened up a cabinet and said I could have used that last week! It’s my old brains.

The little basket in the bathroom is just too adorable. I love all your wonderful organization ideas. Thanks so much for getting us together for this hop. So fun.

    • July 11, 2020 / 4:42 pm

Thank you Katie. It has been fun trying to come up with new ways to decorate the little shower basket. It sits behind the bathroom door so the only people who see it are the guests that use that bathroom. They get quite the surprise sometimes. πŸ˜‰

    • July 11, 2020 / 4:43 pm

Thanks Angie! That crate has been all over the place. It’s one of my faves. πŸ™‚

I love old crates and baskets. You always have just the best decor. The Hubs has a few old crates that were his grandfathers. He has stuff stored in them in the garage. Every once in awhile I will sneak one out and decorate with it. lol! Drives him crazy! But they are just too cute to live in the garage!

    • July 11, 2020 / 4:45 pm

Thanks Tammy! If my hubs had old crates or boxes in the garage, I’d switch it out with a delivery box. He’d probably never know. Then we’d both be happy. πŸ˜‰

Thanks to all of you and the other bloggers for sharing your basket decorating tips. So many great ideas! My favorite was the blogger who shared that she uses baskets for her outdoor pillows. What a great idea! Thanks again!

    • July 12, 2020 / 11:35 am

Thank you so much Mary! I’m glad you found new ideas and were able to visit them all. The wonderful blogger who stores her pillows in a basket is Amber from Follow the Yellow Brick Home. She always has the best ideas! Happy Sunday!

I love all these gorgeous ideas Cindy! Especially the basket on the curtain tie back – it’s as genius as it is gorgeous! Thanks so much for including me in the LOL hop – it’s always a lot of fun!

So when you abbreviated Lifestyle of Love and put LOL, I had never thought of that before and literally laughed. I will forever see it that way in my head now – the laugh out loud group! Ha! Glad you liked it Michelle and that you could join in. I’m still swooning over your beautiful table with berry baskets. Have a great week!

Hi Cindy, I’ve been looking forward to this blog hop since Paula at Sweet Pea mentioned it last week. How fun! I love baskets, and crates, and boxes, and . . . Thank you for coming up with these awesome ideas.

I, too have my cloth napkins in a basket, but I like the way you have sets placed vertically. And I hadn’t thought to have a table cloth in there as well.

Your hanging basket on the shower curtain tie-back is so cute! Great idea!

Finally, I love the Scripture above your snack station. Ephesians 4:32 is one of my favorites–so good to be forgiven.

Keep coming up with these wonderful ideas. Blessings!

    • July 13, 2020 / 1:30 pm

Awe, thanks so much Marilyn! You just made my day. I have tablecloths, runners and napkins in the same basket. I like it because they stay together. If I don’t, I can’t find them! I need one for placemats. The next Lifestyle of Love hop is Mason Jar ideas. Should be another good one. πŸ™‚ Thanks again for the visit and commenting. Hope you have a wonderful week!

My pleasure Emily, so glad you like it, join in and found something inspirational! Those silver platters are the left overs from when I made that giant silver platter wreath. Have fun collecting!
