How to Set a Pretty Fall Table Outdoors

Spread the love

One of my favorite things is setting a pretty table, even for a casual lunch.  Most days there’s already a seasonal table runner and a centerpiece.  But this time, to take advantage of the beautiful weather, I took the pretty table outdoors.  This month’s Design Challenge made it necessary, but I’m certainly glad it came along.  Let me share how to set a pretty fall table outdoors.

If you’re jumping into a Design Challenge for the first time, we basically take an inspirational photo and make it our own.  Then we share them with you so you can see how many different looks you can get.  I always encourage you to try it.  You could get hooked like we are.

This month, our inspiration photo comes from Karen at Sanctuary Home Décor.  I’m not sure she’s blogging anymore, but what she’s done in the past is timeless and beautiful.  The location is at her ranch in Montana.  Make sure to check it out.

What I notice about Karen’s beautiful, rustic table and what I’d like to incorporate on my table is:

  • A centerpiece with autumn stems
  • Small pumpkins
  • Table lamp
  • Chargers
  • Place setting

Karen has a runner, but I bought this tablecloth a couple of years ago and haven’t been able to use it.  When I saw it, I immediately loved the colors and pattern.  This served as the foundation for selecting the other components.

I often choose the colors first when I put a table together.  It could come from a plate, a centerpiece, a napkin, a tablecloth, etc.  I enjoy color-coordinating things and mixing patterns.  Once you choose that, the rest will come together easily.

Karen has a tall milk can with fall stems as her centerpiece.  It’s striking and is definitely the star of the table.  However, I prefer to use short centerpieces so you can see everyone at the table.  And because my table is just for the two of us, I set my “centerpiece” to the side instead of in the middle.

I was going to use the basket as a cornucopia-type arrangement with fruits and leaves.  But as I looked around the house, I found different colored faux stems and flowers.  It turned out better than I expected.  All I needed to do was bend the stems and stuff them in.

Next I chose the dishes.  I personally cannot get enough layers.  Emily Post might not agree, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using a tablecloth, a placemat, and a charger if that’s what you like.

Choosing similar colors to the tablecloth, I pulled out bronze chargers and my favorite green plates.  Although, the acorn salad plates have become my new favorites.  I’ve had the napkins for a few years and use them as much as I can. Just look at those fabulous layers, patterns, and color.  I love it!

The small gold ceramic dish is another festive choice.  I’ve used it for nuts, chocolates, a scoop of dip, even a scoop of ice cream.  This time it was for a bread roll.

Karen has pumpkins along the table, but I didn’t want to cover up my tablecloth.  The pattern is busy, and the table is small, so I only have one small pumpkin close to the tea glasses.

I used this vintage pitcher for our tea.  The flower on it might not look like fall, but I chose it for the colors.  To me, it’s the perfect size and gorgeous!

I didn’t want to forget the lamps Karen had on her table.  I purchased these on Amazon a couple of years ago and couldn’t be happier with them.  They stay on for hours!  I put it in the center, and it made the entire table so cozy.

Well, I think I got everything Karen incorporated into her table.  And it’s with things I already had and in the seasonal colors I’m using this year.

For a quick recap on how to set a pretty fall table outdoors: choose your foundation (tablecloth), then your centerpiece.  Don’t forget the layered dishes in coordinating colors, and that’s it!  It always helps to have an inspiration photo.  You can always pin and use mine.

Next up is Wendy at WM Design House.  Her outdoor table is magnificent!

Don’t forget to check out the other tables below.  Happy fall friends!
