5 Reasons To Still Love Farmhouse Style No Matter What The Trends Say

Spread the love

Hey friends!  We are at the farmhouse right now and as I walked in the back door and saw the decor I realized it has been quite a long time since I was here last.  The mister has been coming more often because you can’t leave an almost 100 year old house to survive the elements without a little love and pampering.  So while the Mister was piddling outside I was online and happened upon an article saying “FARMHOUSE WAS OUT in 2022“.

5 Reasons To Still Love Farmhouse Style No Matter What The Trends Say

Say whaaat?  She obviously didn’t know that for those who adore all things farmhouse, it’s a lifestyle and not just a trend.  And even though Joanna Gaines might have influenced some of us a teeny bit, we are here to stay.  So instead of making a comment on the authors page sweetly explaining how she was incorrect and two sandwiches short of a picnic, I’ll just tell you – 5 reasons to still love farmhouse style no matter what the trends say.

Porch with bed bench, white curtains and plantsLazy Hazy Days of Summer Farmhouse Porch

Reason number one:  It’s always inviting.

Who doesn’t want to be greeted by a space (doesn’t have to be a full porch) that screams you are welcome here? Using items that encourage neighborly kindness is key to a farmhouse (at least in Texas) lifestyle.

It’s not about ringing the bell and rushing in.  To have an inviting first impression promotes cordiality, warmth and hospitality.  No matter what size space or even if the area needs a little work, it can draw you in and give others a sense of friendship which in a way is the epitome of a country/farmhouse lifestyle.

Reason number two:  It’s always cozy and comforting.

Yep, there’s a difference between inviting and cozy.  I look at it like this.  If you’re in your own home by yourself – do you see several spots where you’d like to plop down and read a book?  A place where you want to linger or take a nap?  Or look at something that takes you back to a fond memory or makes you smile?  That’s cozy and comforting to me.

Another reason to forever love farmhouse style is how it makes you feel as you live day to day.  I have been in several homes where I’m afraid to touch anything, sit down for fear of messing it up or heaven forbid, create a stain.  Casual white slip covers and warm woods are perfect kindred spirits for everyday country living.  The woods hide several issues and slip covers are easily washed.  And no one will feel like they’re walking around in a museum.

hutch with vintage fencing and spindles

Reason number three:  It’s kind of quirky.

If you like something that doesn’t seem to be an actual decor item but you want to display it anyway because it shows off your personality or what’s important to you then farmhouse style works!  Eclectic style does too but farmhouse style can incorporate that as well.  Kind of like these old chair spindles.  Most people might put them out in the shed but I rolled up old fencing to make a vase and dropped those babies in like flowers.  Unconventional but totally me.

Another example is hanging the tags from our adopted Mustang and Burro.  It might be strange to some or a little awkward but it’s potentially cute and doable with farmhouse style.  πŸ™‚

3 vintage galvanized buckets with flowers

Reason number four:  You can reinvent or reuse things differently.

This is probably my favorite way to live out a farmhouse lifestyle.  I’m not talking about recycling plastic or paper even though we do that.  I mean using one old piece in a completely different way.  Like the cone shaped galvanized bucket I’m using as a planter when it was used to put out fires decades ago. Or like the old sewing basket as a planter too.

If you want something different than what you find in the store, you can probably make it by using something found.  I use different pieces all the time.  Like old brick molds for mail, tea cups in my canisters for flour and sugar scoops, an old porch column for a coat rack.  No matter what the trend these days, recycling isn’t going out of style.

outdoor picnic table with quilt

Reason number five:  It promotes a simpler life.

Do you ever find yourself comparing your life or home to someone else’s?  Maybe while scrolling through Instagram?  I get it.  I’ve done it.  But what I’ve found with farmhouse style is that it’s easier to find the joy in the small things and to be content with what you have.  It’s the fun in the journey of making your house a home.

With all that I’ve mentioned, I truly believe Farmhouse Style is classic and a lifestyle that has way more to offer than a transitory trend.  And if my 5 reasons to still love farmhouse style no matter what the trends say doesn’t resonate with you or if you’re teetering on the proverbial barbed wire fence wondering if you should sell it all and start buying something “on-trend” for 2022, take a look at your surroundings.

Do you love them?  Are you happy with your home (wanting a few minor adjustments is okay)?  Do you enjoy old, chippy, rusty, nonperfect treasures?  If so, do not listen to the trend makers out there.  Listen to your heart and maybe we’ll see each other at the next yard sale!

But if you decide to let go of the farmhouse style, let me know and I’ll be right over with a big ‘ol grin and a truck to retrieve your treasures.  Just sayin’.

You are so right!! And it will never go away–in some shape or form. It will remain. Joanna Gaines was somewhat an influence. She didn’t invent ship lap. My Grandmother in the 50s had it, she had a big farmhouse sink with a built in drain board. She had white rooms and quilts and pine furniture. When she passed my aunt thought the house looked old so they ripped out everything Farmhouse, all its personality gone! I was too young to speak up and ask for her sink, gosh how I loved it, or other things. They thought new would be better. So wrong, and so sad all that charm gone. Our former house was very “Farmy” as our kids said. We moved to Texas and I’m slowly making our Texas ranch “Farmy” again!!

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:00 pm

Welcome to Texas Sandy! Where do you live? Even if you live 500 miles from me, if you’re in Texas, you’re still a neighbor. πŸ˜‰
It’s sad hearing your aunt ripped away the farmhouse charm from your grandmas house. But isn’t if funny how we change styles and our minds as we get older? Enjoy making your new home farmy again and thank you for the comment.

    Cindy,
Farmhouse is out but what you shared here for those of us of a certain age is what was called Romantic Country about 25-30 years ago…The Farmhouse style to me was all those bold red and black checked things, cows and pigs and shiplap……The chickens and hens that many considered Farmhouse is actually French Country and have been around for the past 40 years… Weathered items, chipped items , antiques and vintage is making more of a comeback but all of that is plain old Country..”.Farmhouse” was merely the NEW name applied to it for this past decade….No, it will not go out of style and it is a way of life for many but the title for it this decade of “Farmhouse” will be replaced with the next buzz word… so do not fret….My style which is Country Victorian has been considered out of style for the last 20 years and is now coming back as “Cottagecore”….BUT it has NEVER gone out of style in my house as it is what makes my heart sing and after all, isn’t that what we all want our homes to do no matter what the new Buzz word for it is???? You stay true to you and that is all that matters….
    Happy New Year!!
    Hugs,
    Deb

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:04 pm

I totally agree Debbie and thank you. It will be my thing no matter what it’s called. And I’m ready to call it something else. Maybe country chic, rustic romantic, prairie plantation? LOL

Farmhouse with actual vintage and antique pieces is great. Farmhouse with mass produced items purchased from big box stores like Hobby Lobby, is the problem. People watched too much Fixer Upper and went overboard. All white rooms and word signs are a trend that need to go away. All of your photos and suggestions are great. They are beautiful!

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:08 pm

Aww, thanks so much Jennifer. I was telling a friend the other day that I want to help all the sisters out there that love the style but their home looks like Hobby Lobby. Unless they like it that way of course. God made us with our own personalities. Let our homes reflect that too! Hope you have a wonderful week.

My house is Farmhouse style and I love it and intend to keep it.

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:09 pm

Yay Susan! We will live together in comfort forever! Happy 2022.

  5. January 11, 2022 / 8:54 am

What a great blog today Cindy! The photographs are beautiful and I love how you just follow your heart and not care what anyone else thinks. What an amazing gift. Thanks for sharing!

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:10 pm

Thanks Rachel. Not sure it’s always a good thing not caring what anyone else thinks but in this case, I’m okay with it. πŸ˜‰

I agree! Love your ideas and repurposing older items. Farmhouse will never go out of style!

Hi Barbara! I think you and I will be kindred spirits until we meet Jesus. Woo hoo!

I love my little yellow farmhouse! It was built in the 1800’s . Does history go out of style?

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:15 pm

If you ask younger people, they’d say yes. But as they finally grow a brain and figure out life, they’ll change their minds and see it doesn’t go out of style. It just gets tweaked here and there. Thanks so much for the visit today.

  8. January 11, 2022 / 9:55 am

I don’t think that farmhouse is going anywhere. I really enjoyed seeing pictures of your home that I’ve never seen before.

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:16 pm

Well it’s not going anywhere in my life. I love it and am all in for sure. ALL IN.

  9. January 11, 2022 / 10:01 am

I couldn’t agree more. Blessings to you.

Hi Cindy, I love your post!!! Inviting, cozy, comforting, quirky……those are some of the reasons I’m sticking with Farmhouse decor too! hugs

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:18 pm

Yay Penny! I love being able to hang junk on the walls although I do get some crazy looks from some of my family members. Cheers to quirky and all things cozy!

Hahaha. You go girl. My sentiments exactly. I will always love farmhouse style. I change it up a bit and make some areas French country, but it all works together. See you at the next yard sale girlfriend. πŸ˜‰

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:19 pm

I love a mix of farmhouse and French country. That’s another benefit to loving this style. You can mix it with just about anything and it will look amazing together. Thank you Cindy!

  12. January 11, 2022 / 11:41 am

I love your philosophy and agree wholeheartedly. I don’t pay attention to trends and fads, but just do what I find makes our home warm and comfortable for us. It is very freeing to be true to what God and our hearts tell us to do! I do so love your blog! I love your farmhouse and could stare at your photos for hours. LOL! May God bless you in this new year!

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:22 pm

Thank you Cheryl, you made my week. Some days I can sit out on the porch and watch the animals and life go by. Other days the bugs are as big as my fist. But a lady can get a good work out trying to swat them all. Glad there’s no one around to see it. πŸ˜‰

  13. January 11, 2022 / 11:46 am

I clicked over to the “article” and read her “opinion”. Gosh, where to start and be nice? Why do some people mistake their opinion for worthwhile comment and valuable concepts? who cares? I think we all take ideas and pieces from design and integrate them into our individual aesthetic. I like vintage and antique furniture, vintage decor items, neutral basics. Do I add pops of color, and pattern? yes, Do I have dark woods, yes. I don’t have barn doors, or a farmhouse sink, or shiplap all thru my house. I like traditional mixed in with farmhouse, Country French and English Country. I’m for mixing what I like and what works for me. I don’t care for “modern” much of anything. Let the haters go play amongst themselves, I’ll keep my slipcovered white sofas.

    • January 11, 2022 / 12:27 pm

I know, right?! I’m not sure where they feel their opinion matters or get the gumption to spew it out for all to agree or disagree. I’m so glad you are a girl after my own heart. I love mixing, not matching and being able to share my individuality. Cheers to us both!

      • January 12, 2022 / 5:41 am

Good morning in my opinion there’s two different farmhouse modern day store-bought farmhouse and then there’s yours recycle things used for purpose not just sitting there being pretty like the old time farm houses very different I’d like your home compare to go into Hobby Lobby and buying all the artificial stuff it’s pretty I like the old stuff growing up on a farm so as I’m thinking your kind of Farmhouse will never go out of style it’s the retailers wanting to sell and it’s the new stuff that’s going out of Style

        • January 12, 2022 / 11:29 am

Good point Eva. Retailers need something to sell and some of it is super cute. I just happen to like the real deal but that’s not always possible. I’ve purchased several new things too though and enjoy them. A good example would be our seating. I’ve sat on the old stuff and goodness me, the springs and lumps… That’s not for me. And a good ol’ cow print makes me smile. Thanks so much for commenting!

    January 11, 2022 / 1:23 pm

Thanks Cindy and very well said. I love both your homes, and even though I may be getting rid of things to make less clutter, I’m still keeping that homey simple style. Enjoy your day!!

    • January 11, 2022 / 2:03 pm

You are so sweet Marlene, thank you! It’s hard keeping up with two homes. Not sure you remember but I used to have farmhouse style in both homes but people were getting confused as to which house was which so I made some changes. The everyday house is kinda me but I’m catering more to the mister there. The farmhouse has my heart and my stamp all over it. Have a wonderful week!

    January 11, 2022 / 2:03 pm

Love it! I just bought some of those chipped spindles!

    • January 11, 2022 / 2:40 pm

Woo hoo Julie! You’ll have to invite me over so I can see what you do with them!

  16. January 11, 2022 / 2:03 pm

I don’t even read articles where people want to be experts. Style is so individual. I love farmhouse style even though I don’t have it in my home. You wave that farmhouse flag high, Cindy! (and go back and make that comment you almost did, dare ya, lol). You should!

    • January 11, 2022 / 2:44 pm

LOL Rita! You always encourage me with your sassy self. I’m going to find that flag then wave it and sing some country song on my pedestal. At least until the dogs start howling or I get a rock in the face. πŸ˜‰

    January 11, 2022 / 2:43 pm

These reasons are all perfect for why farmhouse will remain constant. πŸ™‚ You can’t tell someone the way they ‘live’ isn’t trending… well, you can, but that’s just silly!

    • January 11, 2022 / 2:51 pm

Exactly Julie, thank you. I totally agree.

    January 11, 2022 / 3:03 pm

Well for all those who are turning their back on farmhouse, I look forward to scooping up all those cast off treasures at the thrift stores! It is such a casual, embracing lifestyle. One we can all use more of in our lives. Farmhouse forever!

    • January 11, 2022 / 3:07 pm

So true Susan. Maybe I’ll finally be able to find some ironstone around here?! Farmhouse forever!

  19. January 11, 2022 / 3:55 pm

I couldn’t agree more friend! Everything you said resonated with me! And I’ll happily truck with ya to pick up everyone’s cast offs πŸ˜‰β€

    • January 11, 2022 / 4:30 pm

Deal! We’d have a great trip you and I. Laughing and planning and creating. So fun!

  20. January 11, 2022 / 4:28 pm

Such a great post Cindy! I couldn’t agree more. I love my Farmhouse style. I know it’s not for everyone, but it makes me happy. Sorry, no sale items to be had here. Haha. Thanks for reminding me why I love this style so much too! πŸ™‚ Julie

    • January 11, 2022 / 4:32 pm

My pleasure Julie. I can think of only a couple more styles that would give me the same happy feelings but farmhouse/country living/prairie chic is the best of them no matter what people call it. Glad you visited today!

  21. Lynne Parish
    January 11, 2022 / 5:09 pm

I too, have read several blogs and articles about farmhouse style going ‘out of style’. I was farmhouse and cottagecore way before I’d ever heard of those styles. I love the patina of used, old woods. I love the softness of used, old textiles. The new trends I’ve been seeing do not interest me. They look a bit cold and uncomfortable. We have an old ranch house out in the sticks that has a couple of new rooms built on, very nice and styled the way the rest of the house is – old and comfortable. New anything doesn’t really fit in our home, and I like it that way. I’ve always said folks should style their homes with what is comfortable for them, what makes them happy. Trying to stay up on trends will make your head spin and empty your wallet.
If that’s your thing, go for it. I’ll just follow my own ‘expert’ ideals!

    • January 12, 2022 / 11:14 am

I couldn’t have said it better myself Lynne. There are a few things I like that are new but it’s the mass produced items that don’t appeal to me. Enough of us thinking our homes need to fit in with everyone else’s view of what looks good. Thank you for the visit today!

Reason number six: your daughter is a fabulous decorator and she’s constantly redoing their farmhouse!

    • January 12, 2022 / 11:16 am

I wouldn’t go that far but thank you. I wish I could do exactly what I wanted but the mister draws a line with some of my ideas. πŸ™‚

  23. January 11, 2022 / 8:51 pm

Hi Cindy! I so agree with you! The farmhouse style is so comforting and so much of it reminds me as a little girl going to my grandma’s house. Your little cottage is darling and I believe we need to decorate the way we want to. It’s our home and we need to feel comfortable in it. Happy New Year to you!
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia πŸ˜‰

    • January 12, 2022 / 11:19 am

Yep, being comfortable is important. I wouldn’t wear a fancy dress to a ball that I knew everyone else was going to wear. Especially if I was constantly tugging at it! Happy New Year to you as well. Let’s make 2022 fabulous!

    January 12, 2022 / 11:38 am

I love this post. You have hit every thing right on. Excellent. I want to finally add shiplap in my bedroom, I think this might be what I needed to give me the go ahead.

    • January 12, 2022 / 11:49 am

Great news Pamela and thank you! If someone says shiplap is out, you say maybe for you. I’m not a sheep. I’m a unicorn. LOL! At least that’s what I would say. Cheers to doing what we love no matter what anyone else says!

Love Farmhouse!! My version may be a little different but it is what I love!! Love your photos!!!

    • January 16, 2022 / 11:12 am

That’s another great thing about the Farmhouse style – it can look so different from another friend who loves that style! Thank you Liz for the sweet comment. Happy New Year!

  26. Mary Smart
    January 15, 2022 / 9:10 am

Oh Cindy! Thank you so much for this article. I love my Farmhouse style and will never give it up. I had read just yesterday the 5 things going out of style and Farmhouse was number one! I made a comment and said that as far as I and some of my friends were concerned, “We are just getting started!” You are so right that it is a lifestyle, not a trend. The Decorators and Designers have to come out with new trends every year because that is how they make their money. Everyday people just do not have the money to change their decor every year. Find what you love and stick with it if it makes you happy!

    • January 16, 2022 / 11:15 am

Exactly Mary. I was thinking the other day another reason to love it was that I didn’t have to worry about the scuff marks or worn edges on a table. It just makes it look better! Glad we can live the life together friend. πŸ™‚

    • January 16, 2022 / 11:16 am

Thank you Michelle. There are days I wish a trend maker/follower would walk in at just tell me what my style was called. Even it if it’s out.

  27. January 17, 2022 / 7:11 pm

I can’t even express how much I love this post, but so I’ll just say, PREACH! It does seem like I might have a lot of those museum-y looking things when I look at some of my blog photos, but that’s not at all it feels to us here. Since most everything is thrifted, no one has to worry about breaking things and it’s cozy too.

I feel the same about cottage style as farmhouse style. It’s more of a way of life, and for those of us who love old things with character, our homes won’t change with trends!

Great post! I am happy to feature you at this week’s All About Home Link Party: https://followtheyellowbrickhome.com/all-about-home-link-party-127

Thank you so much Amber, you are so sweet. You and I can preach it all day long. πŸ™‚ Honored to be featured this week. Thanks again!

  28. January 19, 2022 / 5:49 pm

You are so right Cindy! How can anyone possibly say something like this? They are saying the same thing about shiplap and I think we can agree that I am not changing my walls or my account name anytime soonI would love to share this in my Saltwater Sounds wrap-up this weekend.

    • January 20, 2022 / 10:38 am

I totally agree about the shiplap too. It’s been around since they started building houses so I don’t think it’s going anywhere either! And I love the name of your account. It fits perfectly for where you live! Thanks for featuring it in your wrap-up. I’m honored!

I agree with everyone who supports your love of old things, country items, and who reuse, refurbish, and re love….which validates the years of collecting furniture and decor that I enjoy in my home. My Aunt Nell lived on a dairy farm in the country and had a Hoosier cabinet in her kitchen. I bought one about 45 years ago, and enjoyed it for many years until buying this house built in 1952 with a kitchen that was too small for it. My daughter loved it so I gave it to her and enjoy seeing it in her dining room. I use an old wooden handled potato masher, and kitchen matches as my bathroom deodorizer.
I love your writing and our chat today and with you and the others who commented.

    • May 7, 2022 / 11:00 pm

Aww Joan, thank you! You made my day. Unlike your daughter, I wish my kids loved anything of mine but I’ll have to wait until they finally get a brain and cherish something other than the new and trendy. I keep telling them they are missing out and just don’t know it. πŸ˜‰ Thank you for the visit today and for sharing about your family – I loved it! Happy Mother’s Day.

You are so right. I am not nearly so influenced by Joanna as by Nanny( (my sweet grandmother) breadboard, using anything to hold her beloved plants, making do rather than going out to buy new things. Besides having some of her things in my house reminds me of her. I love farmhouse but for me everything doesn’t have to be white. I love my white walls and my wood furniture.

    • May 10, 2022 / 9:17 am

I am excited to hear that Diane. Looking around the house and thinking of the people (grandparents) that used the warm wood furniture, the chippy old stools and rickety tables puts a smile on my face. I hear so many stories about what went on in the farmhouse and usually laugh. I would have loved being a fly on the wall back then. But not literally, there was no air conditioning. πŸ˜‰

When Farmhouse style started to become popular, I was already there. I live in an old farmhouse, and have loved repurposing things, antiques etc , changing them , and making the my own. As my furniture gets old I slip cover them and get longer use out of them. I have kept a lot of my wood pieces wood, and not painted them. I do love the chippy paint look but I have saved that for some of the more modern pieces that are made from cheap wood and it works for me. Thank you for helping people realize that is okay to stay with a style you love rather than following a new trend!

    • May 10, 2022 / 12:12 pm

I bet your farmhome is absolutely beautiful and I especially love that you know your style and stick with it. Thank you for sharing that with us Marianne and thanks for the visit. Happy Spring!
