Farmhouse Style Container Gardening

Large leaning galvanized bucket with flowers
Spread the love

Hello Beautiful Friends!  Today is another Pinterest Challenge Day.  If you are new here or have come over from Eye Love Knots, a few of my talented blogger friends and I get together once a month and show how we’ve recreated one inspiration photo found on Pinterest into something that works with our decor and lifestyle.  Mine is called Farmhouse Style Container Gardening and it makes a fantabulous statement on the front porch.

topsy turvy floral garden

This month our inspiration photo came from Jane over at Cottage at the Crossroads.  She created a container garden using galvanized buckets.  The elements I noticed from her topsy turvy design were 3 galvanized buckets with tiered layers and each having bright flowers spilling over the sides.

3 galvanized buckets with flowers

With Jane’s topsy turvy look, she drilled holes and used screws to keep them in place.  I have drainage holes in these buckets but I didn’t want to drill more so I chose to layer them individually.

Just look at that rusty goodness!

Rusty iron plant stand with galvanized bucket and flowers

I placed the smallest bucket inside one of my favorite purchases from years ago – a tall rusty iron plant stand found in Canton, TX at the First Monday Trade Days.  You can find metal/iron stands almost anywhere but if you need one to get a tiered look like mine, check out these farmhouse looking stands here, here and here.  Here are a few galvanized bucket looks too here and here.  You just need different sizes and to place them at different heights.

Anyone know what this is?!

Cone shaped bucket with flowers

The second conical shaped bucket is one of my favorite pieces.  Just a little bit of trivia for you.  They are called Fire Buckets and are shaped like that so the bucket couldn’t be sat on the floor and/or be used for a different purpose other than assisting with fires.  They were kept on hangers in a specific place in case of a fire.  That’s genius!  Especially for people who didn’t put things back where they were supposed to go.  Hmm, know anyone like that?  LOL.  You can actually find the vintage pieces on Etsy and Ebay if interested.

Large leaning galvanized bucket with flowers

For the last layer of my topsy turvy look, I used the largest galvanized bucket I had and simply leaned it up on its side.  There is a crack at the seam so it will drain perfectly when watered.  The Mister won’t like the water dripping on the porch but look at the state it’s in now.  It needs to be stripped and repainted anyway so no biggie.

I love how it turned out!

I spend so much time out on the front porch that I wanted to place this container garden so I could see it all the time.  And I think using a corner space is perfect for this type of look.  It gives us a sense of coziness and breaks up the vertical lines from the porch rails.  I love how it turned out!  Not sure if it’s the color of the buckets I love more, the vintage farmhouse look or the pink flowers but oh my golly, I could sit out there all day long.  So far, even for a black thumbed girl, this Farmhouse style container gardening thing is a breeze!  Even if I have to share it all with a couple of little nasty green lizards. Bleh.

Now it’s time to see what my talented friends came up with from our inspiration photo.  The first visit will be to Christy at Our Southern Home.  She never disappoints and is so clever with her tiered stand!  Enjoy them all and let me know what you think in the comments.  πŸ™‚

Thanks so much Barbara. I have enjoyed looking at it for a week now and hope it stays alive while I’m gone. It’s in Navasota so it’s up to Macy to keep them going and I think she has black thumbs just like me. Oh boy.

I Cindy, I love it! I have several of those large galvanized tubs. I need to prop one of mine up too! Okay Trade Days sounds amazing!
Thank you for all you do for this Challenge. I love it! laura

Glad you’ve been inspired Laura. I always love hearing that. And yes, Canton is amazing. I feel sad for all the vendors that haven’t been able to set up there. Hopefully we can get back to normal soon.

I took note of the conical bucket immediately – what fun trivia about it.

I love your display and I’m going to look for some pieces to create the look on our front porch.

Thanks for hosting the challenge. It’s fun to be back.

I’m excited you loved my display Carol. You never know if someone else is going to like something as much as you do so that puts a big ol’ smile on my face. Glad you are back as well! Happy Spring!

I love the different shapes and sizes of containers you used, Cindy. Mixing them up is what creates the great interest. They add a lovely vignette to your porch. One day, I’ll have to come visit. Thank you for hosting.

    • April 28, 2020 / 9:16 am

Thanks Carol and I’d love for you to visit! We’d have to take breaks from all the chit chat. Hope you have a great week.

  5. April 28, 2020 / 9:14 am

It looks fantastic! I need to fire bucket half the contents of my home. I now spend 1/2 my day looking for things because there are two at home who can’t seem to put things back. LOL

    • April 28, 2020 / 9:19 am

I feel ya Laura! I spend a lot of time helping a certain person look for things too. Mostly shoes – LOL. We even have a designated spot for them! Aiy yi yi.

  6. April 28, 2020 / 10:47 am

What a pretty display you created for your porch! I’ve never heard of a fire bucket. That was a fun history lesson for me. Enjoy your pretty flowers!

    • April 28, 2020 / 10:52 am

Thank you Paula. This was a super fun challenge and even more challenging trying to find things around the house. But I love it too. Fingers crossed the plants stay alive for a long while. πŸ™‚

  7. April 28, 2020 / 10:58 am

Cindy, how pretty. I love what you did on the corner of your porch. It is going to look so beautiful when the flowers grow. Amazing! Love your version.

    • April 28, 2020 / 11:54 am

Awe, thank you Terrie. I appreciate that you have so much confidence in me that you think the plants will grow! πŸ˜‰ Fingers crossed!

I’m so impressed that you know the name and purpose of the conical shaped piece in your display. It seems like only yesterday that we were discussing its unknown purpose.πŸ˜‰ thanks again for the wonderful trip to Navasota. I loved the entire week that I spent enjoying the front porch, and being there to watch the magic happen as you worked on this blog. Such a peaceful and happy place! Well, except for the golf ball sized hail storm. But even that failed to put a cloud on the serenity of the farmhouse. You are such a blessing to me. ❀️

    • April 28, 2020 / 12:12 pm

We should never again have to ask questions or wonder about anything with Ms. Google around. πŸ˜‰ Glad you enjoyed yourself and liked watching how hard I work all day. And I totally agree, the Navasota countryside truly is a peaceful and happy place.

  10. April 28, 2020 / 1:32 pm

I love the rusty goodness. That conical bucket is a darling. Thanks for hosting this fun hop.

    • April 28, 2020 / 1:57 pm

Rusty, chippy, cracked and old, that’s where it’s at! Always happy to host. πŸ™‚ Thanks Katie!

  11. April 28, 2020 / 3:06 pm

I’ve never heard of a fire bucket before! Thanks for the history lesson:) Your perfectly rusty stands and galvanized bucket show off those pretty pink flowers perfectly! Wish I could sit on the porch with you and enjoy the view over a glass of lemonade or sweet tea! Thanks for rounding us all up, friend!

    • April 28, 2020 / 3:07 pm

My pleasure Lora. I wish we could sit and chat all day as well. Oh the fun we would have!

  12. April 28, 2020 / 3:49 pm

I love your spin on your topsy turvy container garden, Cindy! Galvanized metal is a fave of mine, and I often have to say ‘no’ to myself in order to refrain from putting too much in MWA. I didn’t even notice your deck until you said something, and I still think it looks lovely with your farmhouse style pails!

    • April 28, 2020 / 3:54 pm

Oh, do you mean the sad pealing gray paint? Yeah, a project I’m not looking forward too. Glad you like my spin on the project. It challenged me for sure. Not always easy to come up with something different but I sure like how it turned out as well, thanks!

  13. April 28, 2020 / 4:28 pm

Wow, I love your buckets and the whole display of flowers, Cindy! I love that conical one and the rustic stand in particular. They are such unique designs. I spent some time in Canton shopping with my sister-in-law and landed some wonderful pieces. It’s a treasure trove! We encountered some tornadoes while we were there, but that’s a whole other story!

This was a great challenge, and I always appreciate you coordinating and hosting. Pinning!

    • April 28, 2020 / 4:41 pm

Thank you Crissy. So glad you liked it. Wish we knew each other back when you were in Canton. I would come and crashed the party! Love the back junk yard in Canton the best. Well, and LauriAnna’s. Did you visit that store up the road?! Man, I want to live in that store. We could trade bad stories of Canton days too! LOL

  14. April 28, 2020 / 5:23 pm

Great interpretation of the original photo. cundy. Love the splash of pink!

    • April 28, 2020 / 5:27 pm

Thank you Pamela. Pink is my favorite color so I’m always drawn to using that first. πŸ˜ƒ

  15. April 28, 2020 / 6:59 pm

Cindy, I felt like I should have known that was a fire bucket but didn’t, so thanks for the explanation. I’m fascinated by historical trivia like this, and I think it’s the perfect addition to your beautiful bucket and flower porch collection. Love this month’s challenge!

    • April 28, 2020 / 8:07 pm

Thank you Michelle. It may seem simple when you look at it but this challenge really stretched my thinking. I do love the collection too. Maybe I need more?! Yep, I think I do.

  16. April 29, 2020 / 8:12 am

Oh Cindy, love this all rusty with character. Such a great find and looks great with flowers nestled into.

Wish we would get some sun and warmer weather. Still grey and chilly.

    Cindy

    • April 29, 2020 / 10:23 am

Thank you Cindy. I’ve used that plant stand on the porch for years but I think this year is my favorite look because of the added galvanized buckets. It usually holds a bucket with cans of mosquito spray and wasp spray. Very boring. We’ve already come back home again and I hope Macy keeps the flowers alive. She’s a bit like me when it comes to plants. πŸ˜‰ Sending warm sunny weather wishes your way!

I have several old wash tubs just waiting to be used. Viewing your display has given me another idea. I cannot tell from the picture. Do you have the plant in the wash tub in another pot, or did you plant them directly on the tilted tub?

    • April 29, 2020 / 4:33 pm

Yay! I always like hearing others get great ideas from posts! The one in the tilted tub is in its own pot. Thanks for the visit Nancy!

  18. April 29, 2020 / 5:17 pm

LOVE this so much Cindy! I pinned it to so many different boards and shared it on FB too. It’s super creative and I love the containers you chose and the flowers are gorgeous. Your porch always looks so peaceful. I love it! Hope you and your family are all safe and well, CoCo

    • April 29, 2020 / 5:39 pm

You are so sweet CoCo and always so encouraging. I wish I could carry you around in my pocket and pull you out each time I need a smile. Thank you!

  19. May 1, 2020 / 9:24 am

Oh, my Cindy! This is just dripping with charm. What is it about galvanized metals and a little rust that just sings to me? What a lovely interpretation for this month’s PC. Love the way that little cone planter is hanging.

    • May 1, 2020 / 10:38 am

I feel the same way Christy. I think the rusty goodness reminds me of my childhood and the no-care-in-the-world attitude. We could all use a little more of that. Glad you like it. I’m still loving it!

  20. May 1, 2020 / 9:20 pm

The fire bucket is a new one to me! I am certainly going to be on the lookout for one because it makes such a darling flower container! Love your interpretation!

    • May 1, 2020 / 11:30 pm

Thanks so much Jane! That’s high praises coming from you! I appreciate the visit too. Hope we didn’t disappoint you. πŸ™‚

  21. May 2, 2020 / 1:29 pm

I love all of your galvanized buckets. I never knew that about the fire bucket! That’s so interesting!

    • May 2, 2020 / 4:29 pm

Thank you. I never knew about the fire bucket either until I googled it. πŸ˜‚ Glad you could visit today!

So pretty! If you give the galvanized tub a quarter turn (and a BIG push to the planted flowers, the bottom won’t be on a seam and leak onto the porch. I remember my mother bathing my brother and I in a big tub like this outdoors in the summertime!

    • May 5, 2020 / 2:10 pm

Thanks Kathy! I’ll do that. And how fun to have happy memories of using a big tub like that. I also what someone said was a baby bathtub. It’s about 3’ long and 18” wide. All I can say is – that’s a big baby! Glad you visited today and thanks again for the tip. πŸ˜‰
