Tips on how to decorate for winter!

Spread the love

Hello friends.  I was thinking, some of us will leave the Christmas decor up until after the new year and some maybe up until the end of January.  Then there are some of us who’ve had our Christmas decor up since before the first official day of fall and have grown weary of it which means we are looking forward to a less cluttered, more spacious look.  As a bIogger, I’m definitely the latter and am raising my hands with glee, dancing the winter hokey pokey, waiting to put it all away.  Are you like that?  Or are you sad because you don’t want your home to look bare after the Christmas decor is put away?  Well I’m here with inspiration and a few tips on how to decorate for Winter.

Tips on how to decorate for winter!

First I go room to room bringing everything that looks like Christmas to the dining room table for easy organizing and packing.  Like the red and green candles, the Santa’s, the cranberry wreaths, the red ribbon, etc.  With what’s left I try and use in my winter decor.  Things like the natural looking garland, other pieces of greenery, pinecones, candles and woodsy looking elements.

7 Tips on how to decorate for winter

Tip #1:  Replace the red/green candles with cream, white or birch bark candles.  They are perfect for winter.  I have a super easy way to DIY some.  If you’d like to see it, click here.

Tip #2:  During Christmas I had garland that looks wintery because of the added pinecones.  And even though I’m not using it on the mantel, I can move it to the dining table instead (Tip #6).  For the mantel though, how about hanging white pompom garland instead?  It’s so cute.  Like little snowballs.

Tip #3:  Potted trees and wreaths are always nice.  I keep boxwood wreaths and topiaries around all year.  I switch out the bows.  Placing them around the room gives it a new-life feeling.

Tip #4:  Keep the comfy throw blankets out but keep them in neutral wintery colors instead of red and green.  They are so pretty and add some needed brightness on some of those cloudy, snowy days.

Tip #5:  Layer your rugs.  I use a cowhide rug atop our jute rug for extra comfort.  You can use any low pile rug and it will look great.  If layering, keep the size at least one to two sizes smaller than the large area rug sitting underneath.

Tip#6:  On your dining table, consider using metallic, cream or white candle sticks with pinecones and natural garland for a centerpiece.

Tip #7:  If you have a tall vase, how about adding bare branches from the yard?  Adding a strand of twinkling lights to the cluster would be fun and cheery too.

With my easy tips on how to decorate for winter, remember, winter decor is usually neutral. Like the colors you see outside – creams, whites, grays, browns, etc.  However, if you aren’t a person that likes neutrals, bring in pops of green or ice blue.  You’re still decorating in a wintery mood with green and blue.

As you finish decorating, look around the room.  Does it make you feel cozy or cold?  If it’s cozy, curl up with a good book and enjoy.  If you feel like it’s frosty and uninviting, add more warm wood tones and texture.

Most importantly, keep tweaking until it makes you smile and remember, it doesn’t have to be completed in a day.  🙂

Cindy this is so timely I was just thinking what I’ll do when the Christmas decor cones down. Great advice I always take away the Christmas colors too. You know I’m all about cozy, bare is ever my style . I can’t wait to see what you do with your homes! Merry Christmas

I do lots of these things too not realizing anyone else does! I love putting Christmas decorations out, putting them away & using a simple winter decor ( usually winter whites & blues) including lots of natural elements & textures. By January I am ready for less. Less of everything-decor, food & stuff! Great post! Merry Christmas friend!

Thank you Laura. I’m looking forward to much less too! It’s refreshing to me. Glad I’m not the only one. 😉

Beautiful ideas, Cindy. I love Christmas decor so much but it always feels so good to take it down and clean things up. Of course, I have that mentality that says….Christmas is over now it’s time for spring!

    Merry Christmas friend.

I love your suggestions for how to decorate for winter. I think it is such a good idea to try and keep greenery around the house in the winter so it doesn’t feel so lifeless after the holidays. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks Lisa! I think greenery is the best way to add life for sure. Even rooms with lots of pillows and throws and coziness could use some greenery. 🙂
