Inspiration for a Modern Farmhouse Dining Room

Oh My Golly Friends, I have a hallelujah moment today!  We finally painted the dog barf gold walls in the dining room!  Can you believe it?!  Aaaaahhhhh!  I’ve lived with dog barf colored walls for 8 years!  I am doing my happy dance.  Still smelling the glorious paint fumes.  Still feeling like 10 birthday’s have come together with Hugh Jackman, Keith Urban and Jesus all in attendance!  So today I get to show you what I’m dreaming of and my inspiration for a modern farmhouse dining room.

Before paint color in dining room

Just look at those walls.  Yes, I know the buffet is piled high with stuff I need to pack away but it’s about the gold walls!

Now for the fun – I get to decide what else to do to it.

I sold the chairs, the buffet, the rug, even the curtains and want nothing to do with that old outdated room.  Out with the old, in with the new!  BTW, the new color is Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige.  I call it light taupe.  It looks gray in the picture but it’s a creamy white/pale taupe/fab color!  🙂

I decided to keep the table because I like the legs and it expands to seat more people than we typically need but mostly because tables are so expensive these days.  And a few years ago I adopted a motto – do NOT spend a lot of money on large pieces of furniture.  Why you ask?  Because I like change and I’m tired of feeling guilty when I want to get a new piece but cannot justify getting rid of the expensive piece I only got a few years ago.  Do you do that?  Feel guilty?  Well thankfully I don’t anymore.  I try and be a good steward of the money God gives us so adopting that motto was a great idea for me.

Farmhouse Inspiration Time!

Here is what I’ve saved from Pinterest for inspiration.  These have my name written all over them!  And below are some pieces that may show up in the new informal/formal dining room.  Although, if I change my mind and don’t follow my own advice, don’t hold it against me.  😉  I am a bit wishy-washy when it comes to my own home.  Ugh.  On another note, if you’d like to see way way more inspiration, follow me on Pinterest.  I have several beautiful boards and one of them is Country Living and Farmhouse Decorating Ideas.

The picture on the left is from Allie Cecil Blog.  I love the fireplace, the light colored walls, hints of dark metal and the white plates.  Everything is so light and airy and you know I have a thing for white plates from this post!

The picture on the right is from Liz Marie Blog.  She’s all about the farmhouse and is as authentic as they come.  What I love about her room is the same hints of black, the slip covered chair and the juxtaposition of the worn wood table with the elegant chandeliers.  Pure bliss in my book!

Possible Chairs:

Choosing basic pieces for my home is the goal and have been thinking about 4 of these cuties – the KUBU chairs from Pier 1.  They have different shades of gray and taupe and they’ll look good with our existing table.  I’ll get cushions too for comfort.

I’m also thinking about 2 of these for Hostess chairs.  I definitely want slipcovers for sticky fingers and easy clean up but to me these look modern farmhouse, country chic and rustic luxe all rolled into one.  Can you tell I don’t have a theme for the look I’m going for?  The dining room will probably turn out a little hodge-podge but that’s okay, I like my kind of hodge podge.

Rug or no rug?

We have wood floors so I go back and forth on rugs.  The rug we had before made it difficult to pull the chairs in and out but it was cozier underfoot and conversations weren’t as loud.  So if we get a rug, it may be like the one below.  It’s mostly likely not going to hide dirt or spaghetti sauce very well so do we go for looks and comfort or practicality and cleanliness?  Honestly, I’m all about the clean.  pottery barn rug would look nice for an urban farmhouse look. Always a yes to curtains!

Then we need curtains.  Do we go with a silk like before?  It would bring an upscale look to a formal dining room.  But our style (okay my style) is nothing fancy or over the top.  We’re more like real plates and mason jar kinda people.  So do we go with stripes, solid linen or maybe sheers?

There’s a lot to think about and I’m super excited to begin the process.  Shoot, the hardest part is finally over!  Plus I already have a couple of fantastic statement pieces for this room but for now, that stays a secret.

All of that inspiration for a modern farmhouse dining room has me losing sleep.  It’s the excitement!  I’d love to get your opinion on some of these choices or if you have a better idea, let me know!  Comment and comment some more!   Fingers crossed I’m finished by Easter.  Wouldn’t it be a delightful place to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord?!  Why yes, yes it would!

Happy Decorating Friends!

I had the same gold color you did in my powder room and kitchen. (don’t ask me what I was thinking) I love all your inspiration. I felt like after we painted the room lost 30 pounds.

Isn’t it crazy how that works? Instead of walking thru the living area to get to the kitchen from our bedroom, I find myself walking the other way because it’s so much brighter!

You can so do this!! It’s a look that is easy to pull off and you are such a great collector…I bet you already have fun pieces to make it look farmy. Hey, we bought the slip-covered dining chairs from Ikea and LOVE them. They were inexpensive and are amazingly sturdy all while being gorgeous. How many curtains do you need? I have a set of white linen type curtains from Pottery Barn that I bought 5 years ago for our last house and ended up not using. You can have them if they work for you.

You know when we were married we saved and scrimped to buy expensive furniture but not so much anymore. I’m with you…I don’t want to be married to furniture for the rest of my life. We have to strike a balance with price and quality.

Stacey! In just the short time of knowing each other, you already know me well. I do have some fun pieces for that room! Thanks for the curtains – that’s so sweet and generous! I’ll email you and see if they work.
